NVIDIA 5000 SERIES - ***NO COMPETITOR HINTING***

back in the day the xx80 used to be a cut down same-chip as the xx90 (or titan or ti), then they switched to using a smaller chip (e.g. what would have been the xx70 chip) as the xx80, then they went with samsung for the 3090 and they messed up so badly on yields that they basically gave nvidia a bunch of crap 3090 chips for free, so we got the 3080 back to being a cut down 3090 chip... then they went back to smaller chip for xx80

so it depends on your point of view (basically how old you are or how long your memory is)

I mean, if you go back to the geforce 9 series then you had 4-5 models of 9800 (GT (both G92B and G92 based), GTX, GTX+, GX2) all based off the same G92 chip and then the 9600, 6-7 models, some of which based off the smaller G94, but 2 models based off a cut down G92 chip)

basically nvidia have been all over the place on using big or small chips and cutting them down for different tiers of cards
This is why a chart looking at the shader % in relation to the top chip of that generation is where you really see where things land.

As a VR whore, I really have no choice with a struggling 3090FE, other than a 5090FE now. Was really hoping the 5080 might have some secret sauce. Used 4090's really not an option now either. Time to lube up I guess....

Think I might just stick with my 4080FE and dlss4 now. How much do you guys think the 5090FE’s will be scalping for on eBay tomorrow ?

Why isn't a used 4090 an option? They'll likely settle at around a grand and for that you've got a 60%+ uplift over a 3090.

I seriously doubt they'll do a proper 5080. There's no room in the node for it unless they sell cut down 5090 dies.

That and they don't need to. You can't buy a 4080 any more so your only choice is a 5080 or 5090.

This has put me on quite a mind journey.

Coming from a 3080 was likely to upgrade this gen and thought I'd try and get a 5090. Reviews out for that convince me it's not worth it so I decide 5080 would be the one. Now the reviews for the 5080 are so mediocre I find myself leaning to 5090 again. I'll try for 5090FE and if no success just wait another generation. Disappointing effort.

The 5080 is meh only because its not much better than a 4080S (compared with 3080 to 4080), but from a 3080 to 5080 its nearly a double of performance... the 5090 is double the price of the 5080 but only 50% increase (and only at 4K, if you're running 1440p or less then its even less of an increase).
I'm currently on 3080 and going for 5080 because I'm on 1440 UW and the uplift of performance for 5090 doesn't justify the price of the 5090 for me.

Either that or keep eyes out for a 4090 with warranty.

I think they will stay well above 1k for quite a while now, and I'm not really prepared to spend that much on something used with no warranty. And no one is really selling them, especially now! And I would want an FE only.
