I thought I would experiment with overclocking my an inferior competitor value (Inno3D) 6800 DDR2 graphics on PCIE.

I found increasing the PCIE speed with clockgen did not seem to have any effect so I found NVtweak which adds overclocking settings to the main Nvidia properties screen.

I benchmarked with D3D rightmark first then used the autodetect settings to O/C which gave me a mild increase 325 to 360 mhz (ish) and memory from 700 to 760 (ish). I thought that seemed a bit tame and had heard of these cards being o/c'ed a lot more so I tried the manual settings and got to 480 Mhz and 810 memory before it failed to pass the NVtweak test.

Next I ran far cry which crashed so I put the settings back to standard and re-ran far cry. But now some areas of the scenery are overtaken by blackness - almost if there's supposed to be a bit of a shadow there but there's just nothing there. i can still play the game but am wondering if i've broke the card...... The game is also running on a new hard disk and windows installation which may have something to do with it but I dont think so. I've upgraded direct X from 9 to 9c (latest) and Nvidia drivers are the latest (also the same as the previous install) this has made no difference.

Well I hope people here are adult enough to realise that users may but PC stuff from elsewhere - I only had an inkling thec OC UK sells stuff when I went to look at the forum and there's stuff advertised on the homepage. (after I bought everything)

Perhaps if I use the forum more I'll warm to OC uk and may buy stuff here in the future.??

Doesn't matter if people are adult enough, it's in the rules that you're not allowed to post competitors :)

Well didn't mean to offend anyone - good job the (unamed) card is acutally manufactured by some-one else (inno 3D - I assume I can mention manufacturers?) otherwise I could never ask for advice 'cos I could not say what i've got other than 6800.

Yes it's got the 3 patches installed - i'm wondering if there's any-more? incidentally I think on the old install I did not have these problems - i was wondering if it was the patches that caused the probs...

WOW - I checked ubisofts website and got all the patches - they were also on the DVD but was able to install 1.1 - I already had 1.3x but now the water (i'm on the river level) has come to life - the dark areas have gone and the trees etc sway in the wind - amazing. I also tried setting the detail to max (v.high) and the frame rate is great (6800 back to standard) - I dont even know if there's any point overclocking it now!
So - thanks : )

If you want to overclock next time do it is smaller steps like 20Mhz and test each setting quickly by running a game like Far Cry for a few minutes instead of going for a high overclock straight away as you can bork a card by doing that.
