If I was to put 2 9800 gx2's in the 2 PCIe 2.0 slots on a 790i mobo, which other expansion slots would still be available (ie which slots would not be blocked up by the chunky cards)?

I think a Dual Slot card in Bottom PCI-E Slot would block the bottom PCI slot, so if you have a X-FI its buggered.

Im looking at my 780 now but its hard to tell but its tight, looks hard to fit TRI-SLI, they must just nearly skim each other.

The one above the botton gx2 would be free for a sound card!

Sometimes you got to put Soundcard on Bottom or at least 2nd bottom slot as of IRQ's esp in the AGP days and Nvidia GPU fitted.

Some of the mobos like the Asus P5N-T Deluxe (780) only had 1 PCI slot at bottom so SLI= NO Dedi Soundcard, so advise you make sure its not same as that.

Nope - the P5N- T has two PCI slots - above and below the bottom PCI-E 2.0 slot. You can have 1*PCI and 1*PCI-E cards with SLI (but it will be toasty)

With a pair of 9800GX2 you will have the same slots free as the P5N-T, however, some 790 boards have an additional 1x PCI-e slot above the top 16x slot

Must be TRI SLI then that you losse the PCI slots (only read it myself), no clue as I had the Striker II Formula POS and SLI is a waste of time and money IMO. :) (All dual slots GPU's I meant).
