Ok well its been a really long time since ive looked at upgrading my pc, im talking years.

My current gfx card is a 7950 GX2, is it worth upgrading? Im running a sorta oldish but decent setup on the rest of my pc:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 duel core 4400+ 2.21ghz
2 gb Corsair XMS ram
Asus mobo
etc etc

it worth going to a 8800? 9800? or just upgrading my whole system?

I only play Eve online, Warhammer online, CS etc. However it would be nice to run RA3 at a decent spec and SC2 at a decent spec also.

if you have enought cash upgrade your all system it will last longer if you don't upgrade just your gfx and get http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showp...3 TV-Out/Dual DVI/HDMI (PCI-Express) - Retail faster than 8800, 9800 :)

Yeah thats pretty good looking card, well im a student so I would have to stick to a really low budget, however atm all i would really need to replace is my gfx, cpu, mobo and ram. Ive got a tagan 700w psu, dvdr and a nice case, not sure if i would have to change my HDDs.

I think the old 8800GTS 640mb was about the same as a 7950 GX2 or might have been the 320mb. So if you want to upgrade go for a 8800GTS 512 or better. Note that the 9800GTX and 8800GTS 512 are pretty much the same card so i wouldn't go for a 9800 GTX or the GT (which is a 8800GT) version.

Which leaves you with:

8800GT
8800GTS 512
9800GTX+
ati 4850
GTX 260
ait 4870 = ish GTX 260 (216 Stream Processors)
GTX 280 = ish 9800 GX2 when sli is enabled otherwise its an 8800GTS 512 i think
4870X2

I think that covers most of the card at the moment for worst at the top to best and the bottom. I'm pretty sure thats the current order but will be dependant on the games you run.

I think Warhammer online and RA3 are endorsed by nvidia so it might be worth going with the green team if they are the major games you will be playing.

The 7950GX2 (when overclocked) is slightly faster than the 640Mb 8800GTS.

I upgraded from one to an 8800GT and that was a fair bit faster, but the 4850 would be a bigger increase - and about the max worth it on that CPU.

To make it a worthwhile upgrade the absolute bare minimum I would go with is the 4850.

To be honest, your current rig is pretty well balanced, I'd be tempted to go the whole hog and get a new mobo/Core2/DDR2 setup along with say a 4870... or hold fire a bit longer on everything.

Perhaps an upgrade in two stages.

Change the CPU/RAM/Mobo and see how well that works with the current graphics card, then change the card in a month or so?

Just an idea :)
