Nvidia 8800 HDCP concern

I have read on the inquirer site that the new Nvidia cards can't do HDCP over dual link, http://www.theinquirer.net/default.aspx?article=35966 Big concern for people that own 30 inch monitors, as these owners know that if we use single link the resolution looks bad and displays very big pixels.

I was at the verge of upgrading my system and include a 8800GTX; specially since my graphics card an ATI X1600 has just died on me. Now I would probably want to wait until R600 or a new rev of the G80 series as I do major upgrades every 2 years and I don’t particularly want to pay over £400 for a GFX card that can't do apparent HDCP requirements on high end PC monitors.

I've heard of similar issues from people on these forums.

Yes, they may be fully HDCP compliant, i.e. displays 1080p, but to a maximum of single link DVI socket, so people with 24 inch monitors and below will be able to see them without any problems as their resolutions permit it. The 30 inch monitors require dual link so they can display their only capable resolution, otherwise it only displays half of their native resolution and it looks awful. Unfortunately it will be hard to find a review or person who has the Nvidia 8800 series, a 30 inch monitor and blu-ray or HD-DVD media to test it on.

hmmm I see what you saying now, I guess you will have to skip this generation if you intend of having one of those big high resolution monitors or hope HDCP never makes it It hasn't been mentioned much but I'd guess the reason for that is I doubt there are many people with Dell 30" monitors, 8800GTXs and blu ray or HD-DVD players and discs with HDCP protection

Hi, I do own a 3007WFP and I’m sure within 2 years I will have a blu-ray player to view them high definition movies... so you see my point? That’s why I’m concerned about this drawback on the Nvidia 8800 series. Although I am still hoping something like this can be fixed via software revision or drivers or what the inquirer have discovered is actually false.

Personally I haven't followed computer hardware for a while now but one thing I do remember is not to always believe the inquirer However from memory Dave Baumann from Beyond3d knows his stuff and if he says it won't work then it probably won't work. Though I heard he joined ATi a while back....

You should better wait, now the currents video card are not fully native, like the G80 and others, which can deliver only 720p.
Also seems microsoft it's not allowed to release HDCP for Windows XP.
So You need an OS supporting HDCP, Vista, a Monitor supporting HDCP and a video card supporting HDCP.
Also it should be native support. Seems some manufacturers are "patching" the board with the crypto rom chip, but it will have problems with the HD/Blue ray drives.
The movie industry has agree to wait two years to enforce HDCP, giving a window for manufacturers to be ready.
Wait until next year, and don't rush, G80 and R600 are the beginning, the R700 promises to be a different thing
