Im relatively new to the specs of cards and whats the best so im sure some of you will be nice :-)

Ive recently bought Fallout 4 and to my slight disappointment, my computer is slighty under spec for the recommended. When I say slightly, I mean everything is covered apart from the graphics card. The game runs on the lowest settings but the FPS can be horrendous.

Fallout 4 recommends an Nvidia GTX 780 3GB which is in the region of £250. However a friend has suggested Nvidia 960 4GB which is in the region of £75 cheaper. He said whatever I buy, make sure it ends in a '60'

What should I go for and will a 960 4GB be as good as a 780 3GB?

Regardless, I need to get some money saved.

The GTX780 is around 40% faster than the GTX960.

What is your budget and system spec?

Oh, and welcome to the forum. :)

Thanks for the welcome

Its a custom built PC with 16GB RAM, Intel i5 Quad Core processor, 80GB SSD and a second 500GB HDD. Win7 64bit. Gigabyte GA-Z87-HD3 System Board. I was given a 1GB Radeon 5450 Graphics Card but I soon found the on board graphics were a lot better so although its in, I dont use it.

Budget ideally is £150 to £200.

Wanting something that might last a couple of years before I need to upgrade again but I know things move fast these days which is why i dont want to spend a small fortune.

Your cpu should be fine, but can you clarify what model it is, an i5 2500K?

CPUs aside, here is a variety of cards to suit your budget :

If you want fallout 4 with Ultra everything ( give or take ) then the 780 is way more powerful than a 960. A 970 is a bit faster than a 780 but they are £250 ish.

For £200 i would get the one posted above unless you dont like the colour Orange!!!

No idea what a new 780 goes for and couldn't say on here if I did. But at secondhand I wouldn't pay any more than £150.00 for one now. Sold my two for around this several months ago. 970 would be a better bet. Bit faster, more ram and cooler running.

You should be able to get a 2nd hand 970 for around £200 which i'd recommend over the 780.

The 780 is a great card however

I wouldn't be spending anywhere near £250 for a 780 at this point. I paid only a little more than that for them two years ago.

With graphics card model numbers, the first number usually denotes the series, and the end numbers the model within that series. So generally you're looking for a higher "series" number.

eg:

low end - 710, 720, 730, 740
mid range - 750, 750Ti, 760
high end - 770, 780, 780Ti

Thus, a 960 is still only "mid range" even though technically the number when taken as a whole is higher. There are some caveats when cards are close due to technical differences and so on (eg. a 960 will likely beat a 770 under some circumstances), but this is a very generic rule for beginners.
