Nvidia 9800gt

Honestly can't remember where a 9800gt comes in on the performance scale, a little way behind a 4850? In which case a 5770 wouldn't be a massive leap forward, but would be a good value one, kinda.

Quick check, the 9800gt(well a 8800gt, pretty similar) gets fairly close to a 4850 in some things, pretty far behind in stuff like Crysis. A 5770 would be a decent jump forwards.

However end of next month the new AMD cards will launch so either closer to that time when the 5770(or maybe higher cards) get some good deals to clear the shelves before the new cards come in, or after the new card launches and you could be looking at 20-30% extra performance for a very similar price.

So I'd say wait a month at least to see what price drops you can get on the current stuff, even in the next week or two the 5770 might get more competitive prices to fight with the 450gts overclocked cards.

Right now though , if it had to be in the next couple weeks, if you can find one of the low priced 460gtx 768mb cards, that would be around the best value you can get.

That is a pretty damn good card at a pretty damn good price, though it seems likely the "new" AMD card at that price point will be faster and close enough to make it worth waiting for.

Well i have around £130 to spend on a new card and there just comes a time when your current one just needs to retire on the shelf in the cupboard and make way for young blood. I've had the 9800gt for 2 years now so looking at the same kind of longevity with the one im buying.

Also using a Corsair HX520W PSU. I dont know how to work out my power requirements but i presume if it can run a 9800gt it can run a 5770.

How do the GTX460's compare to the same range of ATI?

(Im a bit of an Nvidia fanboy :D)

The 9800GT isn't that bad still, I'd suggest holding off to see what AMDs 6*** bring. If anything they might force the price of the 5*** and nvidias GTX460 down somewhat.

Then again, going by that no one would ever upgrade... So I'll get my coat ;)

a 460gtx 1gb sits in a hole AMD don't really have anything, only the 5830 which is a heavily cut down 5870 so its basically a very expensive to make chip for AMD, it just doesn't work at a low cost.

it would go, in terms of speed top to bottom 450gts>5770>460gtx 1gb >460gtx 1gb

with prices around £100>£115>130>170 at the moment.

Now when the 6series launches things will change, the 5770 will likely end up in sales, probably below £100, AMD will likely have a new 5770 with +25-35% performance at the same price, which will likely put it pretty close to/above a 460gtx 768gb.

AMD are set for a pretty large shakeup it would seem between around £80-180 so its well worth waiting till end of October, unless you have a game absolutely crying out for something in the next month its crazy to not wait.

The best case scenario is theres a new card thats insanely fast, stupidly cheap and blows all of that lot away, worst case scenario is theres a new card thats a little faster, which pushes the prices of ALL those cards down.

Right now a 460gtx 768mb if you can find one at £115 is easily the best value under £150, they were on sale recently with lots below £120 like the one I listed, its a VERY decent card for the price, even after the new cards its unlikely to drop below £100 so theres not a whole lot more to save if you can't wait.
Power wise on a decent quality 520W, just about the only card I wouldn't go for would be a 480gtx even though it should be fine, if you overclocked/overvolted it(easy free performance) the power usage goes up quickly and with 280-300W at stock, thats going to be pushing it. Basically any card you buy sub £300 your PSU will be WAY more than you need.

This is definitely advice I'm going to follow with my 8800GT - didn't realise it was so close to launch of the 6's. Will feel a right nelly if I buy a 5770 now and in November out comes a 6770 with 10% more performance and half the power draw!
