So I'll start by saying I am new to the forums. Hi !!
I am looking for advice on which Nvidia card to buy.
I have always used ATI cards, so very familiar with there specifications, Catalyst drivers an crossfire system. An performance inrelation to Nvidia cards.

However I am finding I want to try Nvidia for the better performance.
I initially wanted to buy an ATI 6950 2GB for £220 roughly.
I am aware that AMD + Nvidia are releasing new cards any time after December.
But I am building a new system on payday.

I game at 1900x1200. Dell 2407wfp
The GPU will be bought with the following
i5 2500K
16GB ram
ASUS P8Z68 Pro. <Asrock Z68 Ext4 Gen3 if I can get one.
Corsair 850W

So I am asking which is likely to be the best?
I am favouring the 570 1GB, as it's the cheaper.
But how much faster is the 580 1.5GB?
As I am thinking of buying the latest GPU when they release the next generation after December.

So to conclude for the extra £100 is the 580 worth it for a 10-20% performance increase?
An can some one kindly explain the Nvidia driver numbering system?
How often there released?
Thanks.

At 1200p a 570 gtx would be ideal (gtx 570's are all 1280 MB vram as far as I know, apart from a special edition from evga which is 2560MB) if you don't mind a refurb then take a look at the link below, pretty damned good prices tbh and all have 1 year warranty.

If you have the funds then by all means go for the 580 as it will give you that bit of extra headroom for future and more demanding games. My advice would be to get the fastest you can afford, a 580 would certainly compliment the high spec system you intend to build.

if you have money to burn then by all means get the 580 but the 570 is pure awesome sauce.

Sadly I don't have the money to burn.
The 570 is the ideal limit to my budget.
The extra £100 for the 580 would push the boat
(Beans an toast + Super economy driving + No clubbing)
I was trying to figure was the extra performance worth the extra cost.

I am likely to stick with the 570 or 6950 2GB!
May I ask, why Nvidia only have 1250MB compared to 2048MB on AMD cards?
Some thing to do with the memory interface?
Surly that 1250MB VRAM gets saturated under very high resolutions an AA settings?

Games that I play/will play*:
Source (TF2, L4D, Portal)
Race 2010 + Add ons
FSX
IL2
Star Trek Online
Crysis 1/2*
Dead Island*
COD MW1/2/3*
Battlefield 3*

whats your current graphics card? if it isn't too old you may want to hold off if you're going to be replacing the gpu anyway once the new ones are released.

if you MUST have a new graphics card now and plan on replacing it have a look at the refub gtx480, its older gen than the 580/570 but the performance is on par with the 570(570 beter in some games, 480 better in others).

Its too old, honestly think its the single thing holding back my present pc.
Many modern games struggle with it, even though I play many at 1600x1080 to lower demand.

ATI X1800 512MB
AMD X2 4200 (2.8GHz)
2GB Ram
600W PSU
Built about 5-6 years ago!

Can Nvidia cards be miss match'd when running in SLI?
Or like AMD's in that they have to be identical?
so GTX570 + GTX6** when there released?

There is talk of new amd cards coming soon. We dont know the launch date yet but some rumours are saying in the next couple of months. Some are saying they will launch with bf3. Amd have said there new cards will definately be here this year and not next like nvidias.

You may regret buying now and next month amd release newer cards with much better performance for your money.

Waiting is not easy though especially as an x1800 is pretty slow these days. If you have to go for it though the gtx570/6950 are really good upgrades.

Can Nvidia cards be miss match'd when running in SLI? No ie gtx570 has to be paired with a gtx570. They can be of different brands though. Amds do not have to be identical as you can pair a 6950 with a 6970 or 6990.

IMO the GTX570 is a very good GPU.

Im not exactly sure of your budget but a overclocked GTX570 would be a better purchase IMO.

The above EVGA GTX570 GPU should clock to 900Mhz Core i would have thought, that would push it very close to GTX580 performance or just a little more. Obviously the GTX580 can be O/Cd aswell, but IMO the GTX570 is the better option bang for buck. You wont be dissappointed at all.

The above is also a very good GPU and is cheaper than the previous example.
