Nikon have a new 400mm f/2.8 that is 2lbs lighter but prices have hiked dramatically:( This puts it at the same price and weight range as the Canon. I am assuming Nikon will update the 300/500 and 600m is the same fashion. I was hoping amore modest price increase would happen so the older lenses will reduce in value but that looks unlikely now.

Nikon also released a new 1.4xTC which is most welcome. Plus some meaningless Nikon 1 bodies.

Canon released a 16-35mm f/4 L which looks to be a nice upgrade form the old 17-40
They also release an EF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-5.6 IS STM for crop camera. Not really seeing the point given the excellent canon 10-22mm but at least it is not another kit lens update that both canon and Nikon love to do.

I'm looking at getting the new canon 500mm MkII (because it's so much lighter) before the end of the year, want to get back into wildlife again - but I also heard Nikon are refreshing their current telephotos, so will be interesting to see if they release a 500

Historically Nikon update all their big lenses over a period of 12-18months. Photokina might have a new 500mm f/4.0 announcement. The exotics are hand made and they can only release a certain amount at a time.
The 400mm f/2.8 was undoubtedly announced before the Euro cup because it will be widely used there (the pros will be given copies before the lens is on public sale).

I can imagine Nikon will update all their telephotos to be lighter. The 400mm f/2.8 is now fractionally lighter than the new Canon and actually lighter than the Nikon 500mm/f4.0 so beyond price there isn't a real reason to get the 500mm Nikon unless they were to update that also.

Nikon will also want to update the lenses so they can update the prices:(

As nice as the weight reduction is I certainly couldn't justify the increased price of the new Nikon or Canon lenses.I also want a 500mm f/4.0 but there is no way I am paying 11-12K USD! The current Nikon 500mm is around $8000, $6000 second hand
