nvidia anisotropic filtering x16

I notice if I set nvidia anisotropic filtering in control panel to x16 I get bad performance hit at any resolution from 1080p 1440p monitor to a 4k TV. If I set it to x8 its perfect. Is x16 in nvidia control panel more demanding these days?. I do have a 1080gtx i7 6700k and understand at 4k but at lower resolutions I dont understand the performance hit. In game anisotropic filtering is fine but can tell the difference as nvidia anisotropic filtering is more crisp then in game settings.

Anisotropic filtering cost memory bandwidth that can have some slow down, especially for very high resolution textures.
Nvidia advices not to touch it.... However there is no explanation that this happens on GTX1080 of all cards, except if the game you have issues is Metro Exodus.
