Nvidia at it again?

If they'd called it a 250M it would have been bad enough but to call it a 280!? Usually the mobile cards are a little underpowered compared to their desktop counterparts, but this is ridiculous. The 9800 is in no way comparable to the 280, and is not a big enough jump over what's out already to warrant such an extreme name change.

Deliberately misleading.

Seems a natural progression for them given what they have been upto for a while now and like the rest of their business practices this one is also highly dubious and out and out wrong.

If they really are selling a 280 mobile thats actually a G92 chip then thats completely misleading and they must be taken to task over it... they don't seem to realise that these kinda tactics will only result in a long term backfire breeding mistrust even with people who are otherwise very pro-nvidia... I mean its got even me re-evaluating my position and I wouldn't even look at ATI twice normally.

I think most of the problem here is that they had such a lead over Ati with the 8xxx series and didn't think the gap would get closed anytime soon so they manufactured huge amounts of those gpu's that they are now stuck with and struggling to get shot of. That does not in anyway mean they are right in doing what they are and i think they would be better off writing them off as a loss then trying to mislead customer's who might have very long memory's of this into the future.

Being reported as a NVIDIA GeForce GTS 250 over at AnandTech.

that's the desktop name change, the one the OP refers to is about the mobile 280M for laptops, which is what it's called and is G92.

I hope something is done about this, i'm really starting to get a bitter taste from the NV tactic's lately, and the CEO is an aggressive moron, too.

The only thing more amazing than Nvidias renaming antics is the wide held beleif on here that the majority of the consumer base will even notice!! How many people on the big scheme of things do you think even know what a g92 is?!

^man has a point. Laptops don't come with 30" screens, most people just aren't going to notice.

Those that buy this and feel thoroughly ****ed over by it should have bothered typing 280M into a search engine instead of 280.

People have coped with 8800gs not being the same as 8800gtx for years, 280GTX and 280M isn't any more confusing. Most people I know buy graphics cards on amount of ram..

exactly, that's the point. But they'll be faintly familiar with what a GTX 280 is, and think this is the same, lots will e fooled, and i have no respect for both groups, nvidia for doing it, and the users who fall for it.

PLus this is where enthusiasts hand out, so it's clear to us lot that its a back handed tactic.

Whether people notice it or not, labelling an older gen chip which is inferior as the same as a newer gen chip is completely ridiculous, and only serves to make people think it's something that it isn't.

It's ok for all of us on here to say how stupid people will be if they buy these without doing some research but thats a slightly arrogant position as how we may research something and how a technophobe parent researches are two completely different things. It really shouldn't come down to that in the first place because nvidia know what they are doing they know exactly how misleading they are being in terms of the majority of people and they are relying on that to sell this outdated tech.

There are plenty of parents out there who are the ones with the money to spend that want to buy the best for their kids an have a rather simple view on technology and in the uk we have laws that protect people from this sort of thing. They don't know about components and trust that companys won't deliberately mislead them or misinform them and they actually have that right.

This is all on nvidias shoulders and don't let them off the hook by putting some of the blame on people that don't know what they are buying exactly but trust the companys that supposedly do. Truth is i hope someone with the money is duped by this pathetic naming shenanigan and does actually start a legal case because being honest i think that s the only way nvidia will stop this. Don't lets get into the mindset of "i'm alright jack your on your own" because thats when companys really start to extract the urine.

dons flame proof coat :D ........in nvidias defense on this one particular instance isnt thier currant high end notbook gpu actually the equivilant of a lower spec desktop part.

9800m gts 96 sp's
8800m gts 64 sp's
8600m gts 32 sp's

so i can understand why thier newest mobile part is bassed on the older generation 9800gtx desktop part, and they name it equivilant to thier highest part availible. so its nothing new from nvidia at all.

For the people completely missing the point, the problem people like me have with this, is that a G92 chip has been deliberately named in the GT200 family name. Whether is it faster than the old one or not is completely irrelevant, It's not a GT200 die, not a cut down GT200 die, it has nothing to do with the chip family that it is named in. So why other than for reasons to deliberately mislead, would they name it a GTX280M and not a GTS250M or 9800GTXM?

What I find bizarre is how they are going to explain away a mobile 4850/4860 being faster than the 'GTX280M'.

For people who buy this, I would say it's not their fault, the fault lies with nvidia and I would hope manufacturers refuse to play along with it because in my opinion they're just as bad if they go a long with it.

I'm more inclined to believe that this is just misinformation though because it sounds so ridiculous. Rebranding G92 to a GTS250 is bad enough, this is just plain lies and deceit, I really don't believe they are this stupid.
