Nvidia at it again?

most people know nothing and don't do any research - we are a geeky minority - the market as a whole doesn't notice nvidia's tactics

To illustrate: The other day I gave a mate of mine a 7800gt I had over from a recent upgrade to my media pc and he didn't install it because he got home and realised his 5200 also had 256mb of ram and therefore the performance would be the same! When I explained to him what a tard he was being I dicovered he didn't know what a driver was and had never upgraded one - his PC is years old and he's had pcs and played games (badly) for a decade.

*CRINGE*

When people rate the speed of a graphics card you know it's game over for them.

I know some one who fancies themselves as some sort of IT technician, who brags about their leet gaming PC, only to tell me that:

Oh yeah, I've got a pretty high-end PC, got one of those 8600s with the 256MB RAM like, plays everything on max

Which I responded with:

An 8600 is far from high end, what res do you play at?

Response:

But it's got 256MB RAM? I play 1024x768, quite high and sharp image.

I cringed and told him that 1024 is very low res and the amount of RAM doesn't equate speed.

I don't get where these people come from, this guy seems to have some sort of fetish for 1024x768, every monitor touches gets set to it, the place had loads of 19" widescreen LCDs set to it as well and he didn't think the image looked odd in anyway. There was even a 1920x1200 screen set to it.

Anyway /end rant. :p

Anyone know of a consumer friendly way to instantly recognise a better card from the naming schemes ?

If you ask me, it's common sense to research any product that's costing you hundreds of pounds to make sure you know exactly what you're getting. Especially when it comes to graphics hardware, you can't just just look at letters and numbers in the name and know what is the best, you need to look at technical specs and benchmarks.

The mobile market has been like this for ages anyway.

Well, the Radeon 9600 in this laptop is actually the equivalent of the desktop part. But it was a pretty rare model...

True to an extent. If your an enthusiast or someone who know his stuff and you buya rebranded card, and then complain, you should know better to research it first.

But for the average joe, benchmarks and such isn't going to make him any the wiser. They'll just place their money on whatever catches their eye marketing wise.

Or whichever product they are told is good, and its usually a man in a purple shirt.
