Apparently NVIDIA has forbidden it's board-partners to sell any more pre-overclocked GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB cards according to a source at the Dutch Tweakers.net forums.

We (Guru3D) have spoken a couple of board partners and although they are not too frenzy on acknowledging this, it seem to be correct. Current batches of "OC" models are allowed to be sold yet the new batches to be released on February 2008 may be sold only at default clock frequencies.

While it's not very clear what the precise reason for this action, it is clear that the OC models perform just as well as a 8800 GTX and close to the Ultra, which will go EOL (end of life) in ... February 2008. It makes sense to assume that board partners are only buying the 8800 GT & GTS cards right now opposed to the GTX & Ultra thus this would leave NVIDIA with a serious overstock issue. Ehm NVIDIA, why not make the GTX & Ultra cheaper ? Or is there an issue with the actual G92 that NVIDIA refuses to disclose ? "

The GTX/Ultra are more expensive to make, 90nm vs 65nm, and also have 50% more RAM. NVIDIA lineup is all over the place atm but there is some great cards there!

BTW m8, look at the Quotes, none of that is my words, its from a site. ;)

Edited it so others know its a copy/paste job and to look at quotes. :)

Unless they're planning a G92 based 8800GTX / Ultra.

I think G92 only has 128sp so these cards would be nothing but overclocked GTSs anyway. I suppose they could redesign the PCB to get them to support tri/quad SLI but if you wanted a single card where would the incentive be to buy one over a GTS?

They wont do that, the new replacement for GTX and Ultra is supposed to be FEB 2008 but now we read MAR 2008 as they aint in a hurry and may do this X2 model 1st.

They should price drop the older cards and shift them before the launch of the 9800.

Delay that until those are shifted, then the 8800GTS becomes the only manufactured 8800 when the 9800 series comes out.

Would make more sense.

Apparently there are more and more cards failing that have had the memory clocked over 2000Mhz for any length of time. It's either the memory controller failing or the IC's are frying due to the increased current

i thought that concerned the GTs more than the GTS's

ooooo.. Hope they get it sorted. Don't want a repeat of the 7900 series stuff. At least AMD are admiting they have an issue with the resistors on 3870 boards and doing something about it (hence low supply at present of 3870's).

Its not really Nvidias fault if peeps are OC'ing cards to non out the box speed of 2000mhz (DDR) Memory, thats the users fault.

If that fails on a pre OC card with 2000mhz (DDR) speed Memory then its due for RMA (EVGA/Asus).
