nVidia Card + ATi Card?

I have an unusual problem. I prefer nVidia cards, simply due to the Control Panel software, but with my HDTV, they can't produce a picture at 640x480 resolution without causing massive screen tearing. For some reason, this is the case with every nVidia card I have used (with numerous different driver sets), and not the case with every ATi card I have used.

Now, you may wonder why the heck I want to play games at 640x480, but I enjoy playing old games sometimes. They are almost always that resolution, and unless they have some sort of update mod, then you are stuck there.

As far as I know, there is no way around this issue by using an nVidia card. So I was wondering if I could keep my nVidia card as my main GPU, and get a cheap ATi just for use with these games. So I would have the nVidia one as my main, but I could switch to the ATi withing Windows and back whever I wanted to.

Can this be done, and if so, would it potentially cause driver conflicts?

You can't run two graphics cards from different manufacturers on Vista, but you can in XP and Windows 7.

That's why I was confused since Windows 7 is very similar to Vista including the driver model iirc.
