Nvidia card + Ati card?

Hi,

I am currently running an nvidia gtx 260. I am looking at ordering a 120hz screen + 3d vision in next day or two. I am also looking at purchasing an ati 5870 when they become available again.
I was wondering if it would be awkward to have both in my system. Looking at using the 5870 as my main card, and the gtx 260 as my 3d vision card?
Would there be any problems doing this?

If you're running win7 (or XP) its possible to run both cards in the same system.

The only way I can imagine you could use them both at separate times though would be to set the current card to the primary display & change the monitor to the right displat input for each card. I don't think many monitors come with 2 DVI inputs but a lot come with HDMI so one of those could be utilised...

Purely guess work here though. I've never done it before.

What mb do you have ? I think it's better to make sli of GTX260 .

I am planning on having two monitors setup. The 120hz screen plugged in via dual dvi to the gtx 260. I would then use my 24wmgx3 for the hd 5870.

I am using an Asus p6t deluxe motherboard that will allow me to sli, but im addicted to graphics and want to be able to run Dirt 2 in dx11, i wish i had patience cos my brain is telling me to throw in another gtx 260 (which i may have as im going through a bfg rma and they told me im likely to get a 260 back, if not ill sell the card i get) and wait for the new nvidia cards. But i just dont know when they will be out and at what price point.

How will the gtx 260 sli run compared to the hd 5870? I really like crysis (not just because of the graphics) and would love to max it out 1920x1200 in the snow levels.

you can do this with both running one app at the same time a good example is the new batman game - so you use the ATI for rendering and the Nvidia card for physx

That is worrying!


Have you considered actually having 2 machines? While obviously the most expensive option, this would be the most simple. Besides, you'd be halfway there with multiple displays and graphics cards!

Looks so bad that quote haha. Although not quite addicted enough to build 2 machines!

Ive been thinking and i may just wait it out and see what nvidia has to offer, as i really want to play with the 3d vision. Then ill have dx11 and 3d vision on one card
