Nvidia Cards with Video In

Hi there.

I've been sitting around this evening, wondering how best to transfer some old VHS home movies to DVD.

The easiest way would probably be to get a standalone DVD recorder, and scart to a video recorder, but seeing as I don't have one (or really want one, except to do the VHS transfers) I thought I'd think about using the PC.

I currently have a 7900GTO, which I don't believe supports ViVo?
I just looked at the cables that came with the card, and it has the component/s-video converter cable, but each plug has "out" written on it, so I'm guessing "out" is all they'll do.

I'm kind of annoyed at myself for not doing it sooner, as I'm sure I remember the old AGP 6600GT from my previous system supporting Vivo, and even my Ti4600.

So, if the 7900GTO doesn't support Vivo, I was wondering if any of the G80s do, or if anybody thinks ViVo will be supported on any future Nvidia cards?

Alternatively, can anybody recommend any cheap USB2 analogue capture devices? Cheap, as in cheaper than buying a standalone DVD recorder, and capable of capturing at least 720x576.

One last question. When using the video in feature of an Nvidia graphics card, is there any special software you need to use, or will any video capture software be compatible with it, IE the software that comes with nero?

Many thanks for any advice,
V1N.

My 7800GT has VIVO, as do many many other cards. As far as I know all 8800 cards have VIVO.

Not sure what the best software to use is though.

Vivo is hit and miss with nvidia, some generations they support it, others, they don't.

8800 series doesn't have vi only vo.

As for usb dongles, i have had bad experience with all that i have tried, large amounts of latency and very low quality have put me off them.

Couldn't be arsed to read all of that post. But I saw that dbmzk1 mentioned about which software to use. On my old 7800GTX (which supported VIVO) I used a piece of software called WinFast PVR. I think it was a bit of Leadtek software as my card was manufactured by Leadtek.

Can't really say why that's relevant now. :o

Thanks for the replies.

I shall avoid the USB dongle then, I didn't really have high hopes for such a device.

When it comes time to upgrade to a DX10 card, I shall simply look at whatever is available at the time, and if one is stated as having ViVo, I shall pick that one.

If I could find my old 90's Hauppage WinTV PCI, I'd give that a go, if I had a spare PCI slot too ;)

Thanks for the input anyway,
V1N.

Quick warning, a while back I decided to start archiving videos before they fell apart through Video In on a 6600gt, as it turns out the nvidia WDM capture drivers support macrovision on VHS tapes so you get a big white band in the middle of the screen unless you revert to nvidia drivers that are so old they cause all sorts of other problems.
I happened to have a belkin usb dongle lying around which doesnt so I used that.

Thanks for the tip, but it's only home video footage I want to archive to DVD anyway, before, as you say, it falls apart. ;)

Oh ****, if that's all they can do, I'd not bother anyway. ;)

OK, well how can you tell if a GeForce card has Vivo?

I don't recall seeing any video in options on drivers, though I was never looking for them in the past.

Is there an extra program you need to download?
If you connect the relevant cables, does an option appear in the driver?

Sorry, but the GTO I've got was one of the specials from OCuk, and came with limited documentation.

I just tried a quick google for Nvidia and ViVo driver, but all the software links were for 2002/2003 or so, so is it all integrated into current drivers?

If the GeForce cards can grab at 720x576, can they use the GPU to encode to MPEG2 in realtime too?

Thanks again for your input,
V1N.

You download the WDM driver from Nvidia.
But the MSI 7900 GTO does NOT have video in, only video out.

i tried loads of software get >320 work pfft

what software do yoou use?

i also find it a pain to get wdm drivers work on 7800 with a vivo fx5900 wire lol, but it can work ;)
