I know from having a single 7600GT when changing the setting in nvidia control panel

"multiDisplay Performance Mode" setting it to single Screen mode improved performance.

does this also help SLI? or does it have a negative impact?

if your only outputting to a single screen i doubt its going to have a negative impact from setting it to single display performance mode.

however on my 8600gt, 9600gso and 8800gt single display or multi display performance mode makes no difference to performance.

make sure your using the latest drivers too.
