even though is not good at least it is better than the end of the year coming and going and no cards turning up, leaving us all disappointed

I guess they are trying to prevent a repeat of the 400 series fiasco, where people expected cards, and then they never turned up. It's safer to announce something isn't being released and when it does, people are happier.

Also, they will want to avoid the inital mess TSMC made with the 40nm process. They will want to make sure they can handle 28nm at volume.

Same I'm looking at a pair of 670's.

If they release Q1 of next year, it will give me some more time to get the money needed for both.

Ah well, that suits me. I plan on ditching my whole PC for an Ivy Bridge build in 2012 and the future equivalent of the GTX460/560 so I'm in no rush.

We've seen various conflicting reports over the last six months about Nvidia's next-gen GPU launch schedule. It was originally reported that the graphics firm planned to unleash its codenamed "Kepler" (28nm) parts toward the end of this year. That story changed in early July when inside sources cited by DigiTimes claimed that Nvidia tweaked its roadmap due to low yields of TSMC's 28nm wafers, effectively shifting Kepler from 2011 to 2012, while "Maxwell" (22/20nm) cores would be bumped from 2012 or 2013 to 2014.

Apparently, that wasn't entirely accurate. Speaking at the company's GTC Workshop Japan event, Nvidia co-founder Chris Malachowsky reportedly said that Kepler is still (or back) on track for launch later this year. However, Malachowsky was careful with his wording, saying only that the parts would begin "shipping" by the end of 2011, and that doesn't necessarily mean you'll be able to purchase one in that window. It's fairly common for tech companies to paper launch products months before they're actually available.

This is great news.....:)

As there be no need for me to splash out on upgrading my gtx 580's this year..

Q1 looking unlikely, as someone said, they don't appear to have early silicon yet(and the only source to say it taped out is Fud), and they've said production will only start in 2012.

From production to launch is 2 months bare minimum and that would be launching a handful a day from launch, 3-4 months is usual as you get several batches back so you can ship with half decent quantity. Thats even if they start on Jan 1st, if production doesn't start till a couple months after that, or if they have any Fermi like problems then even early Q2 looks doubtful.

What Charlie seems to be hinting at is that stores that Kepler is 28nm, and Nvidia has taped out something on 28nm aren't necessarily connected in any way at all. SO Kepler might not have taped out but something like last time, the gt210/310 40nm dx10.1 ultra low end things, might have been done first.

Would they test the process by having a 580 refresh? Strange we haven't had a refresh yet out of ati or nv

Maybe, I guess that could work but it wouldn't enable Nvidia to keep the performance crown, and it doesn't solve the current immaturity of the 28nm HP process.

From the rumours AMD is using a different 28nm TSMC process (28nm LP), than Nvidia, and apparently this process is more mature, which is why AMD can release ahead of schedule.

What about AMD 7000 series now? :3

September is my estimate, people are already reporting 69XX stock is running very low around the world, OCUK surprisingly has fairly good stock levels though...

And of course going by latest rumours AMD isn't affected by 28nm HP process issues, and AMD them selves have confirmed a 2011 launch, and also used the words 'shortly' when describing the release.
