I was having some issues with games locking up occasionally, and my GTX was getting pretty hot (63 idling and 85 C in game was pretty common...) but found that changing to Direct Fan Control and putting it up to 100% seemed to do the trick. It now idles at low 50s and under load rarely get's above 73. But everytime I restart the computer the Nvidia control panel seems to revert back to "Automatic Fan control" and throttle it back down, and the temps then rocket up again. Any way to make it stick on Direct Fan Control at 100%?

Yup, that did the trick. 
Dunno why I didn't just use it in the first place - already had it installed and everything. Was kinda hoping that there was a to do it with nvidias stuff, but after a bit more reading it seems their fan control is pretty dismal.
