A good example would be Half-Life 2 running on a Geforce 4 Ti. Even though the GF4 is only a DX8 card, it will run a new DX9 game like Half-Life 2.
If some games require newer features that are only found on DX10 cards then they might not work and you might loose out on some special effects, but, on the whole, you will be able to run a DX10 game on a DX9 card
