does anyone know if nvidia support freeesync over hdmi yet without/prior to hdmi 2.1 (i/e 1.4)? i presume not but the monitor im curious about is an LG 29WK500

its the version of hdmi that dictates as far as im aware, AMD uses a custom vrr implementation/none spec hdmi adaptation of Vrr.
Hdmi 1.4 and 2.0 doesn't have an official vrr built into the spec, but on 2.1 it is as far as im aware. im curious if i buy a 3000 card if freeysnc with work with my hdmi only freesync monitor (1.4).
I guess im curious if nvidia will add in support for older displays on the newer cards. i doubt it will happen, but most people thought NVIDIA wouldn't adopt amds version vrr over dp in the first place so yea there is that..
if not then i guess il have to wait for a bit longer to see whats what.

I'm STILL confused. Where on this thread is the currently unreleased/untested 3080 confirmed to not work with VRR TVs?

nvidia will use the hdmi vrr spec which only exists as off hdmi 2.1, anything prior to 2.1 is none spec, hence likely wont be supported/only work on amd cards, nvidia only supports vrr/freesync on dp atm. so whilst it remains to be seen either way, its likely that older freesync/vrr tvs wont be supported on nvidia cards.

HDMI VRR is different than Freesync over HDMI. Some TVs support HDMI VRR others Freesync over HDMI and some both. Nvidia should without a doubt support HDMI VRR on TVs with support for it, while it's uncertain if they will also support Freesync over HDMI on TVs with support for it.
so you are saying nvidia will support a spec that doesn't exsist prior to hdmi 2.1? do you have any evidence of nvidia taking up support of vrr in the old hdmi standards? this will be a good outcome if the case.

Nvidia is already supporting VRR with Turing on a 2.1 enabled TV with support for it. While you won't get the 48Gbit bandwidth you will get the VRR support as long as your drivers are up to date. It works with TVs like LG C9, E9, B6, and CX. Plenty of videos around showcasing VRR in action on LG's OLEDs with Turing.

im not talking about hdmi 2.1, im asking about 2.0 and 1.4 and if they will implement the non spoec vrr associated with these two versions, i already know about the hdmi 2.1 and vrr becoming apart of the actual spec, you seem to have missed the point. :)

Don't count on it. The implementation from AMD's side is a proprietary custom protocol which I'm fairly sure Nvidia won't be able to adopt, not that they want to anyway with HDMI 2.1 starting to become the new norm.

that was my thinking to be honest, which is a shame but i cant change the monitor right now and im not willing to drop the sync tech. :( owell.

I'll be going back to AMD if freesync isn't supported on my Samsung Q70R tv then. I'm not holding out much hope now though. It's a real shame if so as I was all set on Nvidia 3080 I haven't owned an Nvidia card for a long time. Well I hope big Navi is going to be competitive.

i suspect many of us are in the same boat now... i was looking at a 3070, waiting for big navi now then i guess.

another question/thought ive had is, will amd drop support on the older specs hdmi 1.4 and 2.0 on newer cards now 2.1 is a thing, i cant see it? fingers crossed this isnt the case i cant see amd not doing it...

looks like he has the samsung q8dn which has a hdmi 2.0b port, vrr was optional on that, so really its still not really any help, since we need 2.0 or 1.4 working to be sure. im pretty confident it wont work at this point. but happy to be wrong
