So, I am a little excited at pre-ordering the Acer 4k2k XB280HK, which is a nVidia G-Sync monitor and thought I would start an owners thread for those that already have a G-Sync monitor or who are like me and have pre-ordered. I thought about putting this thread in the monitor section but as it is specific to nVidia, it will probably be better off being here.

So to kick things off....

After spending a few days with G-Sync, I’m just as convinced as I was in Montreal. The technology, albeit a relatively simple manipulation of display timing, is a key ingredient in delivering a substantially better gaming experience.

In pathological cases the impact can be shocking, particularly if you’re coming from a 60Hz panel today (with or without v-sync). The smoothness afforded by G-Sync is just awesome. I didn’t even realize how much of the v-sync related stutter I had simply come to accept. I’d frequently find a scene that stuttered a lot with v-sync enabled and approach it fully expecting G-Sync to somehow fail at smoothing things out this time. I always came away impressed. G-Sync also lowered my minimum frame rate requirement to not be distracted by stuttering. Dropping below 30 fps is still bothersome, but in all of the games I tested as long as I could keep frame rates north of 35 fps the overall experience was great.

In many situations the impact of G-Sync can be subtle. If you’re not overly bothered by tearing or are ok with v-sync stuttering, there’s really nothing G-Sync can offer you. There’s also the fact that G-Sync optimizes for a situation that may or may not be so visible 100% of the time. Unlike moving to a higher resolution or increasing quality settings, G-Sync’s value is best realized in specific scenarios where there’s a lot of frame rate variability - particularly between 30 and 60 fps. Staying in that sweet spot is tougher to do on a 1080p panel, especially if you’ve already invested in a pretty fast video card.

My review of G-Sync.

And how to make sure G-Sync is working correctly.

Love to go G-Sync as im in need of a new monitor. 4k res is a no go so im hoping there will be something at 2560x1440, 27" that doesnt cost the earth and a kidney like the swift.

Won't be long Rob and there will be.

Monitor manufacturers who will release G-Sync integrated products in Q2 2014 include Acer, AOC, ASUS, BEnQ, Philps and ViewSonic. The module-equipped displays will be available in 24- and 27-inch sizes.

Once competition is out, I expect prices of things like the ROG Swift to come down but early adopters know the score and I guess are happy to pay the premium.

Not tried ARMA but I do play other FPS games like BF4, bulletstorm, shadow warrior and rise of the triad to give you a few examples of games that vary in terms of graphics and speed. All of them work beautifully with gsync, but I never dip below 35 fps in anything I play, so I'm bound to get the best experience anyway.

Gsync will become a problem if your hardware cannot do 30fps min as you'll notice a flicker on your screen as the refresh rate gets low enough for you to see it. Obviously at that point, with or without gsync, you should look at turning something down to get a better experience.

The first thing everyone will notice who uses gsync for the first time (doesn't matter what game either) is how "static" the image is. This is simply due to the complete lack of stutter and tearing. That combined with vsync off input lag, is a rather nice mixture.

It was you more so that got me wanting G-Sync, purely because of your early comments about the tech.

I am looking forward to this tech in a big way.

If it offends people that much, I will get it moved to the monitor section. My aim was to also see who had pre-ordered and start an owners thread. Sorry if people feel this is in the wrong section and happy to get it moved.

It is one person complaining mate, ignore it, if anything get the thread tidied up so that we can get back to discussing and imminently reviewing gsync

This is the key part. It would get missed if it was in the monitor section and because you need a nVidia GPU, I felt it would be more beneficial to anyone interested if it was here. And the fact that G-Sync is nVidia only (3D isn't nVidia only).

Added Tony to the pre-ordered list :)

Edit:

I shan't get the posts removed and kindly ask that people who have no interest in this thread being here, kindly don't post in here :)

I might join you if high refresh doesnt wow me like 4k did

I would love both in honesty and I will see what happens price wise on the ROG in a years ish time and decide then but 4K is what I am loving the most and smooth frames when they are 40-50? Oh go on then :D

I played BF4 with Neil and normally, he isn't the best (that's putting it politely) but he was owning, so the new monitor must be helping a bit :D
