Nvidia Graphics Switching Problem!

So, at work myself and a colleague have recently received an Inspiron 15 7000 (7567) each to replace our ageing Precision workstations, decent spec (i7 7700HQ, 16GB DDR4, 512GB Lite-On M.2 SSD, 4k display, Nvidia 1050Ti) but plagued with a stutter/freeze that appears to be coming from whatever technology works out when/how to change GPU.

Now I know this used to be called Nvidia Optimus (at least it was on my old XPS 15"), so I grabbed the old Optimus state tools to see when the GPU was being turned on and by what apps/programs, it turns out that almost any new window draw, or redraw (for instance resizing the taskbar) causes the nvidia GPU to cycle from OFF to IDLE to ON to IDLE to OFF, during which all input methods freeze (or the display does, and I can't see the input methods working).

I thought I'd found a fix by opening the Nvidia CP and forcing the PhysX processing to be on the CPU (or the 1050Ti, it made no difference, just so long as it was no longer on "auto"), but after a reboot the problem came back, even if the settings were left how it worked previously.

For the time being I'm using a batch script calling devcon to disable the Nvidia card in Device Manager, but obviously this isn't a particularly great solution. We're waiting to hear back from Dell, but given the hardware is new I'm going to assume they a) haven't come across it before and b) can't do anything about it. But I am interested to hear if anyone has experienced similar (either on the same hardware or similar) and if they have managed to rectify it. I've tried three different Nvidia driver releases, and a couple of Intel driver releases to no avail :(
