Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

i didn't want SLI, but one card didn't cut it.

This was an upgrade (in size) from my previous mITX rig in which i had a dual GPU 690. I always prefer one physical card. Thinking about going 295 or waiting to see what comes out.

I haven't water-cooled for years as i move my machine around and had issues in the past. It's looking like £500-600 to fully water cool my rig. Might aswell sell these and get a titan x or a 980ti

what games do you play fella to think that 1 980 isn't enough? the reason I ask is I forgot to enable sli after installing the new drivers and found everything to feel a lot smoother so I am thinking about selling one card. but am a bit worried that 1 isn't always going to be enough to power the swift @ 1440p

I really need to set some time aside to get mine properly tested and clocked up. Bumped up to ~1460 for a quick test but I'm running at stock at the moment to keep it stable.

I've got a reference cooler - will swapping out the thermal paste and/or pads see a decent boost in temps?

well i had a referance 980 and i was thermalling under heavy gaming unless i had the single fan flat out which was incredibly noisy.

i removed the plastic grey and see thru housing and temps dropped into the high 60's but still noisy so i ended up putting a cheap AIO watercooling unit on it and it was down to 40c under load

My GTX 980s when overclocked used to artefact like mad but as soon as I fitted waterclocks everything was fine and they clocked higher too.

I will have my 980s back in action soon as I am rebuilding an old PC to run them in.

I have removed the front panel dust screen on my rig and now my card does not get over 55C when playing GTA for hours.... In fact it sits around 49c

This is a monster of a cooler on the inno3d. It was good before but I was never expecting that.....

Dust screen are rubbish LOL canned air for the win!

Thinking of getting a 980 currently using a 970 that I overclock to the typical 1500 8000 plus, but it's just not giving me enough power at 1080p it's close to what I'm looking for. So I'm think a used 980 will be a good buy while I still can get a good price for the 970.

I know it's only a little bump up but I'm about 6 fps off making things right. So an Overclocked 980 will be adequate over the ti version until the new gen comes out, which will warrant a whole new PC build for me anyhow.

One question I have will a 980 run ok on my 500w evga standard psu?. I did run an Overclocked r9 290 without any issue at all so surely a 980 will be ok?

Thinking about getting one of these if my current GPU is dying on me, but I'm kind of hesitant because aren't the new GPU's just round the corner?

That is the minimum suggested for the 980 however at stock it is only 175W

What CPU are you using?

Going to buy a gtx 980 within the next week.
Need opinions on this card Msi gtx 980 4gd5 ocv1 it's a blower type which I don't mind and is one of the cheapest 980's available.
I would want to overclock it on its stock cooler. Noise of fans don't bother me as I game using headphones. Is this model capable of a decent overclock doesn't have to be extreme just a good solid overclock.
Or if it's better better to get the Msi gaming edition. Of course stock it's faster but I'm over clocking so not really worried.
I'm sticking to Msi as had cards from them for a while now and no issues.

Don't know yet, will get it tomorrow. The Witcher 3 was giving me 26 t0 35 FPS
but was smooth as butter. Need to test GTA V.

D: if you think it's smooth you really need to try 120 or 144hz with g-sync. I did and can't use my predator anymore. G-sync does make some difference but 30hz is still 30hz and felt smoother but still sluggish. 1440 120/144hz over 4k 60hz anyday. And I love high resolution.

I know you are sticking with MSI but I would recommend the KFA2 980 HOF 8pack edition. Its probably the cheapest right now and is built for overclocking. I overclocked mine over 1500mhz with ease and i reckon it could do more. Played GTA V almost maxed out 1080p getting around 75-80 fps.

yep i would go with this unless he needs a blower type then whatever brand i would go with the ref titan style cooler, looks so much nicer

I went with an Msi gaming card I did not see the 8 pack one till after I bought it already.
However the 980 just isn't powerful enough even Overclocked to 1507 core and just under 8000 mem clock. It's close but still has too many large dips at times. With Gta maxed out pretty much apart from msaa at x4 and shadows just at soft (1080p) it can still drop to low 40s on occasion when normally the fps is much much higher.
Im not sure if it's my setup but all the synthetic benchmarks are saying there's nothing wrong but still I'm not getting the fps I expected or need, in some games. Gta v, witcher 3 and especially project cars. Which I know ain't easy games to run
So going for a gtx 980ti, if my gf doesn't kill me as I've only been back PC gaming for 2 months and so far I've had a r9 290 which died on me, 750ti, r9 290, gtx 970, gtx 980 so five gpu's in 2 months all used so not too bad and I've sold the last one I had to make money up for a new one each time but still....
Also need to upgrade my cpu from an i5 4670 to a i7 4790k.
Then I should just about have what I need.
