Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

Any idea when the "full fat" maxwells will be released? I'm planning on a new build in the next few months and will have the classic do I buy now or wait a few more months syndrome

Reduced the power limit to 270000 instead of 290000 last night and managed to get 2039 on Heaven 4. Core seems to be topping out around 1630

Water block should arrive today so will have a go tonight and see what happens. Will probably remove the back plate too as the SOC has voltage reading points for GPU and memory which are covered by the back plate :(

Well, very impressed so far coming from two 290X's to a single 980.

  • SWTOR, the main game I play has terrible performance, with or without Crossfire enabled. It seems this is an AMD issue.
So far so good. It plays very nicely on the 980. Did a raid last night and no FPS issues unlike the 290X's.
  • BF4 with DX plays fine, but struggles in busy scenes. With Mantle I get sub 10fps at random times.
Had a 20 minute go on BF4 last night on a 64 player map. FPS was sat around 60-70 and very smooth. No slow downs like I got in Mantle. It's early days yet, need to give it a spanking at some point.

I'm yet to try SoM or Titanfall, this will come with time.

I haven't overclocked it yet, it's boosting to 1443 (I think) and memory is 3.5GHz.

The highest I saw the temperature was 45 degrees I think. :o

Not regretting buying this card so far - and for now I'm glad I didn't buy two as the performance with a single card is very good.

Would you be so kind as to upload your bios? Another interesting tit bit I read last night was, you need to put your both temp target and max temp target at 91C. It will never reach that high but it should give an extra boost to to clocks if they reach a lower target threshhold

Can do tonight when I get home. I left the voltages as they are, if I lower them I get voltage limit on GPUz. Even with the lower power limit the GPUz is reporting no issues and it still boost at 1493 default. I'll use a DMM to check actual voltages when I get in and report back, I reckon the card will be pulling 1.3v on load which is what tends to be the limit. All software voltage reporting is wrong for the 970/980s

For reference the stock default and max TDP of the card is 250000 and the power limit is set to 220000 default and 270000 max.

With this BIOS I changed the default TDP to 250000, max to 270000 and the power limit was set to 250000 default and 270000 max.

I came from two G1 970s to two 980 SOCs and was surprised by the difference in heat, the top card was hitting 79°. A side fan has sorted it though.

Yep, the SOC's are much hotter, if anything they can be up to 20C hotter than the G1's. I don't have the luxury of a side fan, as it's an Air 540 window

Well im tempted to flog the G1 and been having my eye on 2x Asus Matrix 980's. Sad i know but it goes with all my other rog products and they look awesome lol.

Then i think get 2 reference 980s, still look great and would probably perform a bit better in sli.

OK, something doesn't seem right here... 970 vs 980 in Cinebench. The 970 174.54 score what I got on my previous card. What's going on...??

I'm quite happy with that. A year of use justifies the purchase, and then it's hand-me-down to the media server with my 980 and gaming on a new 980ti!

Here's hoping it's at least 8gb and a big improvement on grunt over the 980, especially if they're talking about a big price hike. The performance from my G1 at 1440p is tremendous as it stands, and I can't see me buying too many games over the next year. I'll probably still be pounding DA:I and Skyrim in a year's time!

The ROG Swift really compliments this 980 to be honest. I know I've said it before, but the smooth G-Sync game play at 45-55 fps really is something else. I could never have played at those frames without G-Sync.

I've no intention of going 4k, so who knows maybe this 980 is the sweet spot for me for a while to come, we'll see what the 980ti brings.

I'm glad I swapped out my 970's as I really don't miss SLI either.

I did want the G1s initially as I found the 970s excellent, but the extra £120 quid was too much for me.

I've got a 540r too, removed the window and replaced with a panel made from Modders Mesh, fitted straight in, even used the tabs to hold it back in place.

Not really a window man myself...reminds me too much of misspent weekends in Amsterdam. :D

Got any pics bud?
How much did the Mesh cost?
