Nvidia GTX 980 Owners Thread

does this card have any stuttering on 1440p due to its 256 bit bus? and how would it realistically compare to a r9 290x

cant decide whether to order one or stick to my 290x for a year or so

was eyeing up the evga ftw edition or superclocked edition,

With Dsr enabled at 1440, no stutter for me in BF4

Been playing a bit of BF4 with my 980 and quite surprised with how well it runs it coming from 2x 7970's.

Only running stock clocks the performance is pretty much the same using one 980. Well impressed.

Going to watercool mine as I like the silence, plus it might give it some more OC headroom. The heatsink on my G1 does a good job but you can't beat a waterblock. ;)

The bios I linked above Neil is just an editied version of what came on your card. If you don't fancy that I can edit yours to whatever you need. Did you say you had GPUZ perf cap using the stock bios?

Great bios so far...

No vdroop yet!

EDIT : No vdroop/throttling in Dragon Age INQ either!! Finally, nice work Bluntwrapped :)

Great Neil :) Looks like it's working well for you. If 1556 is your max stable core clock I can change it for you so you'll not need to use AB. Give it a couple of hours gaming to make sure you're stable first.

So after a lot of thinking I went for a 980 and will return the 970..
(These were both the MSI gaming cards btw - which FYI are quieter than my case fans even on 100% fan speed).

Runs at a very similar temp to my 970 actually, probably a degree warmer or so?
980 has 77% ASIC compared to the 69% my 970 had.

Note - Information below is based on heaven and firestrike, this likely won't hold true for all games (probably -30 for super duper stable in everything based on previous 970 experience).
Been using +185 for the core, +420 for the memory.
Which in real terms so far is boosting to 1539 stable with 3920 (7840 I guess) for memory.

On the memory:
Ok the Hynix memory doesn't clock to stupid highs of 4100+ that the samsung memory did (shame the MSI cards don't come with it anymore). - Likely can get a bit more out of the memory I think though..

On the core:
So far had it unstable-ish at 1549 on the core but that I believe can be fixed with more POWAH (had a the occasional grey/blue secondary monitor screens..).
You may be thinking the core doesn't sound promising but my previous 970 hit a wall at 1540 ish.. no matter how much voltage/power you threw at it there was corruption on anything that really stressed the card.

Overall, quite happy with the 980 (highest heaven result is 1928 in my testing so far). MSI's cooler is probably not so robust compared to over AIB's but I have an interesting case which warrants the coolers use.

I just need to learn more about boost bins and how they work before I can settle on something solid I believe.

James,

What block did you stick on it? Considering sticking mine under Water. My card drops volts as the GPU hit 60*.

The memory and VRM are cooled with the stock heatsinks, I just have a 120mm fan blowing over them.

How high do the fans spin up to on your 980 SOC when benching? just curious

I ran mine at 100% to keep the temps down.
