Nvidia GTX going to show B&W only on secondary display after loading

Hi

Got a query from my brother earlier, apparently his Nvidia GTX 8800 has suddenly decided to start only showing B&W on the secondary display (an LCD TV connected by HDMI), after it finishes loading (apparently it shows the windows Vista logo in glorious technicolour, then goes to B&W when it loads the desktop).
Apparently if he changes the display order it also happens to his monitor.


My guess is probably a driver issues, but any other possible causes? (before I potentially spend hours on it:p), as he hasn't updated the drivers, or changed the desktop profile for his displays for at least a week.
 
Is it actually black and white or actually 4bit color depth? he might want to check the per monitor color settings in the nVidia control panel including things like digital vibrance, etc. I've found some applications, i.e. media players sometimes reset these :S

As it only happens when windows is loaded, which is when the driver level color settings take effect I'm assuming digital vibrance is at 0% or a similiar setting in that part of the nVidia drivers.
