Nvidia gtx275 hissing

Just got a nvidia gtx275 and while I am happy with its performance it makes a really annoying hissing noise while playing games. On windows it's fine but when I start a game, even in the menu I can hear this hissing! The noise is definately not coming from the fan and most likely is coming from a (damaged?) capacitor.

Before I RMA it, I really want to know if this is normal on nvidia gtx275 cards. If it is then most likely I will go for an ati4890.

This is a common problem on bot hati and nvidia cards, I experienced it with both a 4870 x2 and gtx 260. It seems to be linked to fps, e.g in the crysis menu fraps reports frames of upto 1000 and at this point the whining sound is strong, in game where the fps dropes to around 30 the sound dissappears.

One solution is to enable v-sync

This is it exactly.

My GTX280 does it too, very annoying but worth it for the uber performance of the card! I doubt a company would accept RMA over this as it's not a fault.

Thank you all for your replies :) !

Before the gtx275 I had an ati4870 which didn't have this annoying hissing. And if I knew this about gtx's I wouldn't sell the ati. I've tried with on/off v-sync but still the same :( . Can someone confirm that this hissing is also on ati4890s as well?

A quick search would show you this is a common issue, but not a fault. It does not affect specific cards and appears randomly so it is just luck as to whether your card will do it or not.

If you bought a 4890 it may not hiss, then again it may be worse than you gtx.

As stated a different psu can solve or reduce the problem.

People have used hot glue and other suitable products to fix their cards.

Chances are if you send it back, your replacement will do it as well.

Yep, some of them do it, some of them don't. As a plus point, I found that it wore off after time on my 4870X2, but that took several months. It's just luck of the draw.
