Nvidia Ion

That looks quite impressive and should be a great step forword for htpc's. something to blow the popcorn hour out of the water?

Just saw these on the NV site!

Look absolutely awesome.

Might even game fairly well too! :)

Wonder what the power figures @ 100% load are? It states 18w on the NV site so if that's anywhere close to accurate i would be very happily amazed!!!

its not going to be on its own for long as i expect Intel to refresh its line of motherboards, especially with the atom processor so popular with netbook and small form factor manufacturers.
Its been a nice earner for Intel so far and they wont want nvidia spoiling it

I wouldn't say Atom has been a nice earner for Intel, they don't want people buying Atom over proper PCs and notebooks. That is the issue I believe they have with Nvidia's Ion, it would make the Atom platform more attractive and would move sales more towards Atom CPUs and away from Celeron/Pentium/C2D/C2Q/i7 processors and chipsets, this is what they fear.

someone's on the ball :D;)

Ion looks awesome, with the next die shrink the Atom processors will be a serious contender in the market, as of now they're just a bit too weak. With DDR3(lower power consumption), SSD(lower power consumption), improved architecture and around 2ghz speeds they should really get up there, and that would probably still bring lower power consumption.

But they will have horribly crippled integrated Intel GMA whatever, the next generation of Atom (Pineview) will have the northbridge integrated onto the CPU so Nvidia (or anybody) won't be able pair up thier own chipset with it.

Err lol I'm confused did I miss something?

the only repots ive seen so far mention the memory controller and an onboard gpu of some kind. that doesnt stop nvidia add whatever they want to it unless intel go out of their way to disable external gpus and such.

What I have seen suggests the whole NB will be integrated with some low power version of ICH7 (tigertown or tigerton?) the only external chip, I'm not sure what PCI-E or PCI lanes will be available for connecting external graphics.

what do you mean not a nice earner

Atom has no serious contenders in the netbook arena and it doesnt have the power to beat even an entry level desktop processor. if you look at every netbook on the market then most if not all have atom 270.
Ion only works well with atom as a package, any other processor cancels out the power savings of the motherboard
so with no competition at the moment its a very nice niche market for intel
Intel doesn't fear a move away from the mainstream processors at the moment. It fears not having a strong lineup in any market segment it engages.
what it needs is its gpu to come in and put it together with Atom and produce a fantastic low power high performance nettop solution to fight nvidia Ion.
It has a strong lineup for the foreseeable future
