Thats not really that many for a company their size - less than Norwich union's annual clear out

A company there size did you see it was 6.5% of there staff thats quit a big chunk for any company. Looks like nvidia have a staff size of around 6000 overall going from that article.

yes i see what you mean, how can they keep going with only 5640 employees. 
Its just a case of trimming the fat - most companies do it, they have a sudden period of financial growth and over-hire.
