Well done Nvidia at reaching 90%.

Not surprised:
1.)AMD launches everything too late
2.)Utter obsession with clearing out old inventory first,so it leads to 1.)
3.)The pricing is too close to Nvidia
4.)Software is late and because of 3.) they are perceived as behind in software
5.)They don't even produce enough volume for OEMs which is where most sales are
6.)They can't produce enough volume for OEMs,because of 1.) so they don't get any OEM wins
7.)Over reliant on DIY sales, but because of 1.) and 3.) people just wait until they are forced to drop prices
8.)DIY purchasers are better informed,so would rather have a newer design,so older designs only sell at a deep discount
9.)AMD over compensates for lower pricing by doing 1.) and 3.) for new releases

Even,RDNA4 is late. It uses old TSMC 4N and GDDR6. But because AMD delayed the launch of the RX7700XT/RX7800XT,they probably have too much to clear out. So they will launch too close to Blackwell.

The marketing team at Nvidia are simply fantastic, even if an Nvidia card is trash for the price people still act like their life depends on having it.

But Nvidia also launches first to market,so has first mover advantage too. ATI only got the marketshare it did by frequently beating Nvidia to market.

Plus a huge amount of sales are to OEMs and ATI did far better in this regard IMHO. The second most popular dGPU on Steam is the laptop RTX4060.

But because AMD repeatedly launches later than Nvidia,OEMs will go with Nvidia so they can meet their deadlines. Why would they bother making OEM designs with AMD dGPUs?

Compare that to the AMD CPU division, which mostly keeps to cadences.

The last AMD dGPU series to do OK was Polaris, because not only was it priced well, but was launched within a few weeks of the GTX1060. AMD managed to get some OEM design wins with it.

Huge differences with AMD's CPU division vs AMD's GPU division.
CPUs:
1. CPUs have small dies.
2. Zen's design had excellent perf area even with Zen 1 and they haven't lost that.
3. Intel's CPU designs were poor especially in terms of perf/area and pref/transistors.
4. All of which made it very hard for Intel.

GPUs:
1. GPUs have huge dies since they are crazily parallel and scale well.
2. Nvidia's design is ahead in terms of perf/area - at least since Hawaii.
3. AMD's GPU designs mostly try to catch up.
4. Nvidia seldom missteps. Solder defects back in the Bumpgate era were a major mistake but they got off lightly. Ferni being a power hog, or Tegra not paying back its investment for ages hardly bother Nvidia.

So little chance of AMD pulling a Zen moment on Nvidia.

Unfortunately I can’t see this situation improving anytime soon. Intel are still too new to the GPU scene and their latest offering is priced a touch too high to really grab some market share. AMD are going to stick their foot in their mouth with their pricing and Nvidia have no reason to change.

Amd don't really know who they are aiming at for market share. AMD need a killer feature that gets in the press for a start but they are dealing with a market that don't really give a hell what they are buying as Nvidia is the brand to have. RT ahh yea you ain't using that unless you spend loads and if you do spend loads chances are you are still getting short changed on Vram. Most cod players probably buy a slower Nvidia card as they don't know any better. Most Nvidia users probably don't even know what dlss does or how to turn it on. If AMD are relying on informed gamers to look at what they are actually buying they are far from the mark as thats a very small percentage. Nvidia most likely only make a lot of sense for a small proportion of all buyers yet they have 90% market share. To give Nvidia props they have came at it for years in the correct way and only those that really look into GPU's will know what they are after. Hopefully for all of us Putin i mean Jensen decides not to launch the nukes.
