Nvidia pricing to remain competitive

Anybody want to hazard a guess at Nvidias pricing in the next few weeks, and pricing reductions on older cards ATI as well.

ATI 3850 > £50 ?
ATI 3870 > £75 ?
ATI 3870 X 2 > £170ish ?
ATI 4850 > £120
ATI 4870 > £180

Nvidia 9600GT > £50 ?
Nvidia 8800GT > £75 ?
Nvidia 9800GTX + £140 ?
Nvidia 260GTX > £200 ?
Nvidia 280GTX > £300 ?

Also what cards you think will no longer be manufactured, the above may help people thinking of selling their current cards if we are going to see a good price war coming soon :D

Not sure the 260s/280s will go low because they have poor yields. I'd have thought any price drops would be sooner than later as they must have had a dismal week in terms of sales.

Well Nvidia have already said what the 9800GTX is going to be - $199 which is the same as the 4850.

Therefore 9800GTX will be £120-£130 with the 9800GTX+ been an extra £20 more ($229 list price).

Where that leaves the rest of the line up is anybody's guess

Based on performance:

A G92 GTS will have to be around £100 and hence a 8800GT will have to be £80ish.

Who knows where that will leave the 9600GT

But I have read somewhere that the 8800GT and 8800GTS are end of line and are due to be replaced by 55nm chips just like the 9800GTX+.

And as Rafster says, yields and hence cost of the 200 is very high and at current prices Nvidia aren;t making much money so hence not much to play with in price reduction.

Don't forget, due to ATI 4850 performance figures leaking out, Nvidia dropped the price of the 260 by $50 or £30 on release day as it is.

ATI don;t need to drop the price of the 4850 and 4870 cards. £120 and £180 is the least you could pay on straight conversions inc VAT and already they are available at that price. ;)
Until they get yields up or move over to cheaper 55nm dies (more dies per wafer and hence cheaper) I can't see Nvidia dropping the price of the 260/280 much unless they want to start selling at a loss.

Maybe they could stretch to another £30 tops IMO.

Great times for budget and mid range graphics buyers, bad times for anybody selling an older card.

Up to yesterday you could still get £110 for a G92 GTS but in the next few weeks I can see that dropping to £50.

Given the rumours of high production costs, it would seem unlikely that we'll see a reduction in cost of GT200 until 55nm, but it'll be the biggest slap in the mush to all nVidia customers who just bought a 280 if they do...

Very true. ATi have served up some SERIOUS bang per buck this time around :D (and the 9800 GTX+ appears pretty good too).

I already seen somewhere selling the 280 for ***** ex vat...(I guess i better edit the price out)

The thing is, you have the 4870 which is wedged in between a 260 and 280, which is at pricing levels I doubt the 260 will reach.

Then you have the upcoming 4870X2 which is aimed above the 280 I assume, and again expect this to be significantly cheaper. Even if the 280 approaches its price, the X2 is probably going to be much more attractive due to this new way the cores communicate.

This is why I think the 260 and 280 will be dodos soon, as Nvidia are probably already rushing out a roll out of a "280+" as they need to improve yields if they want to take on ATi.

I can see the price of the 260 and 280 dropping sharply over the next few months. If they could shave £80-100 off the price of the 280 it would be a decent deal.

Then again, that probably won't happen.

Depends on how the pricing for 1gb 4870 looks like. Nvidia would have to put some kind of parity into play otherwise Ati is taking customers from all pricepoints.

This is very true. Even if they did manage to get the 260 down to 4870 pricing, it's still loosing in the benchmarks :\ Other than those who want to go SLI I cant see any reason why someone would buy a 260 right now, its silly.

At low to mid 100's I would have thought the 9800GTX would be a pretty good buy for 1920x1200 (24inch tft) owners.

I've owned ATI's and Nvidias, and in general had slightly less issues with Nvidias. Didnt like the constant need to upgrade drivers for every new game. With my X800 I regularly alternated between different drivers for different games, and it wasnt really fun.

NV I rarely even bother updating drivers, the old addage of if its not broken dont fix it would seem to apply at least on my system.

With GTX+ earmarked to be just a shade more expensive than the 4850 I'll probably finally upgrade my 7900GTX with a 9800GTX :). (Yeah I dont play Crysis on a 7900GTX) Should be a nice upgrade and cheap too!

Wont be the 1st time a company takes a loss to get sales up over competition.

MS and Sony loose on every 360 and PS3 sold (get back on games/hardware/Live etc).

Nvidia won't do it though. Firstly there's nothing to get money back on the way that console manufacturers do, and secondly it's not worth taking a loss just to compete in an area that doesn't make them significant amounts of money. All the money comes from the mainstream and low-end/integrated markets.

If Nvidia wants to cut prices on GT200 cards enough to be competitive then they're probably going to have to die-shrink it to 55nm and possibly even rework the memory controller. But even this means R&D money has gone pretty much down the drain, and even more would have to be flushed just to make the changes.

Personally I think they should just accept defeat on this one and work on the regularly scheduled refresh.

Agreed just like ati did

Yeap totaly...I dont see Nvidia dropped there prices by 50% to compete on this one a 4870 @ £180 competiting with a £450 GT280, ATI just made all the right moves this time round and I think were all glad on that one.

Nvidia can bounce back I think they too will re-think there strategy and introduce cheap to build yet awesome performance cards eventually.
