NVIDIA PsyOps Against HD 7970

From what I've seen the 7970 is handily faster than the GTX580 and in many cases cheaper than an equivalent 3GB 580 at the sort of resolutions these cards are intended for. Obviously a waste if you game at 1680*1050 (lol)

How much faster is the 580 vs the 480? What were their launch prices? The 58xx and 69xx cards were priced to compete in a value competition with the 480/580 and the lower tier NV cards. The 7970 IS the fastest card, and for all the spin and rumours of a $300 NV card that will change the game, nothing exists to prove this. Nothing

Of the top of my head I think its about 10% faster than the GTX480, but as above it dont sound like a Hoover and doesn't need a warning label not to touch it 5 minutes after switching off.

*May not be 5 minutes, may have been less.

I know who fast they both are, it was a rhetorical question. If Nvidia launched a card a few weeks ago at £450 that was consistently 20-30% faster than the GTX580 not a single **** would be given :p

Except that it would.
480 to 580 was due to the 40nm process still being used, likewise with the 5870 to 6970.

The 6970 and 580 replaced their counter parts price wise while offering better performance.

The 7970 is priced as though it was previous generation, and in the majority of cases it's like 20-30% faster than a 580, all Nvidia need to do for a flagship is have it 80% faster than the 580 and they're miles ahead performance wise, which isn't a far fetched performance increase from a die shrink series.

It's an underwhelming performance increase we've seen. Not saying the 7970 isn't good, because it clearly is, but its price is ridiculous.

Brand loyality in the gpu market is a big fail now, whereas NVidia used to hold the crown as prime choice for enthusiasts/gamers, the pricing and the way they've left gaping holes inbetween models has lost them that position.

I will laugh my pants right off if when NV (eventually) release their high end card and it's £600.

Ironic.
If Nvidia's flagship is 600, we've only AMD to thank for enabling them to do so with their ridiculous price/performance pricing of the 7970.

I know what you are saying, I'm in no way justifying the price, just that they can charge that, because right now it is the best single GPU you can slot into your PC. Not in a month or two, maybe next quarter or by the end of the year but now. There is no competition. The semiconductor business is a funny one, the more it changes the more it stays the same!

In three months time the 7970 will probably be £380 or so, the 7950 £299 and some bargainous 7850/70s at £150 and £199. Nvidia will have the Fastest Card on the Planet ™ at £449.99 and the status quo will be restored :p

Wouldn't quite go that far.
I'd never buy an Nvidia GPU.
But AMD are ticking me off.

BURN THE HERETIC!!!

then I will buy two of em, fit them to a truck and use it to run over your 7970... buahahah
