Ok here's the thing, why do nvidia make you pay for the purevideo decoder? I've had it for a while now playing dvds and videos with AC3 audio and been happy with it. I also have quicktime installed as well as MPC to play back H264-HD quicktime media, in both MPC and Quicktime the HD (1080p) files occasionally stutter when the scene gets busy, this is on a dual core cpu and 7950GT gfx card - I thought purevideo was supposed to accelerate H264 content?

WMV-HD 1080p is flawless in WMP I have no problems at all.

I have also had bad experiences with poor encoding quality with the divx codec so today I decided to install FFDSHOW and whoah...

Not only is the mpeg4 encoder higher quality than the divx encoder it also encodes files at around 80fps compared to the 40 odd that divx would use - filesizes are around 10MB for 1min 10 secs of near DVD resolution videos with 192k MP3 audio (or AC3 audio where used)

How can FFDshow be free and be able to play H264 media in any player (I watched all the 1080p trailers off Apples site in WMP11) full speed no stuttering whatsoever and nvidia want to charge to get the same speed decoding performance? I just don't get it!

I'm about to uninstall matroska pack, vobsub, divx play codec bundle as well as MPUI as FFDshow seems to play every media perfectly and with awesome quality.

Why did no one tell me about FFDshow before!

ffdshow seems great, but it confuses me, there's way too many settings for me, i wish i could just say "i have a 1680x1050@60hz monitor, 5.1 speakers, play this DVD" it just seems there's too many settings.

can vista play dvds on its own?

There may be loads of settings, but you don't have to use them. Click on the link above, and just adjust resize / aspect and codecs/raw- all supported.

looks like WMP has some issues with divx format with embedded AC3, it crashes when seeking and loses sync!

looks like I'll need divx installed but can easily just use ffdshow just for quicktime HD stuff :p
