Nvidia releases PhysX 8.09.04 software

So is this good even if you only have one graphics card?

Say a game i had used good graphics and physics... would this help?

Or do you need an sli set-up, one for graphics and one for physics?

Well GPU's are about 50million times faster at Physx than the dedicated Agiea PPU's, so you don't really take that big of a hit with just a single card doing both graphics and physics.

Hardware PPU's had horrible noisy fans so I really like the GPU option.

I've got an 8800GTS running in my server, If I take it out of my server can I put that in alongside a 4870X2 and benefit from Physx in my gaming rig?

Regards

Taff

unfortunatly not. The driver's will crash and window's and other applications will give you all sorts of crowing error's

i tried it with a 4870 (as primary) and my 9800gtx as secondary (to try as dedicated physics card) and everything messed up.

Cheers for the replies, shame about that as the 8800gts is way overkill for the Server, but it used to be my games machine and there's no point in selling the 8800 these days as the prices are so low.

Cheers

I believe you can just hook up the 2nd connection to the same monitor rather than actually using a 2nd monitor. This is the current Vista work around untill the issue is resolved. Obviously your monitor will need to have 2 connection inputs for this.

On XP this is not needed.

edit.. forgot to add that you'll then need to set the 2nd monitor (Vista will see a 2nd monitor) to extended.

Cheers RumbleBee. So, PhysX is using GPU 1 on my sli setup? If I used the 2nd GPU just for physics, would I get better results in PhtsX games than I do with sli and PhysX on my 1st gpu?

I'm not sure about this really.

I'd take a look at this collection of forums posts from Guru3d for more accurate info than I can offer

I believe PhysX can use both GPU's at the same time, or you can specify it to only use 1. This obviously applies to those gamers with only 1 GPU in the first place as well as SLI users. You too can specify the PhysX software to use the main (and only) GPU.

not got a game that uses this feature yet .....but i cant see it the control panel to enable it .. where is it ?

i'm using 177.83 with physX driver

slightly o/t...

I have an 8800GTS 320mb in an ASUS p5k board. I'm going to upgrade to a 4870 or GTX280... if I keep the 8800, and run it in my second slot (which will only be 4x because of the p5k) would it still give a worthwhile difference in physX games? Thinking of selling it but since it's only worth about 40quid anyway it might be an idea to keep it for farcry 2?

You have the same board as me, and you can use it as a physx card but only if you get the GTX280 as it wont play ball with a 4870 card

Only problem you will have ( as i have ) is the dual slot GTS will foul the SATA ports when its in the lower slot, i tried my dual slot 8800GS and it fouled them

Thanks for the reply :)

Don't think I'll bother then... I only have a 500w PSU so a 280GTX would not only be +100quid but also new PSU time (4870 might not work yet). Thinking about it two cards would be new PSU time so I'll probably sell it :)
