Nvidia revised the actual socket on the cards and made the sense pins smaller so it won't even try to pull any power if the connector isn't fully inserted. As far as I'm aware there's been no cases of that new 12V-2x6 connector melting, and that's what'll be on the new cards.

I'll give it a few months see if I hear about any problems. The Seasonic cable I use looks pretty neat.
