Lol it is what the 5080 should have been all along, another name bait and switch by Nvidia, as expected.

It is a gamers card, as told by the article, it has fewer streaming processors so less performant in AI accel than a normal 5090, and of course costing way more than the original fake "5080".

The specs don't align with what's mathematically feasible either so this is likely just someone guessing.

It's just Nvidia making some money by collecting enough defective wafers where most of the GB202 silicon is not usable.

They probably didn't have enough defective wafers stockpiled to release such a card until now. The 5nm process the RTX 5000 is built on is old, mature and defect rate is low, remember this is the exact same process the 4000 series was built on. It's better for Nvidia to make money off them, rather than throw in the bin.

For gamers, my advice is to hold off a GPU purchase this late in the 5000 series, as the next gen (on a new process, smaller transistors, greater density etc) will make the 5000 series paperweights. Unless you really have to play a game right now, good things are coming.

6070Ti is probably my next gpu. But honestly, I could easily skip a gen and upgrade in 3-4 years time with the way things currently are.

14k cuda is what the original 5080 GB203 die should have got, instead they’re now going to sell the left over GB202 scraps which should be around 4090 performance for more than the 5090 launched for.
