I was wondering how hot can the high-end Nvidia cards (480) run healthily as I notice that nvidia cards run quite hot and I don't know if its bad or not and can cause a dead gpu.

No but I was wondering if its healthy running at high temps as currently my 3870x2 runs at 70c which I would considered high.

as long as it's below 105C it's fine according to nvidia

can probably go a bit higher than that actually but not too much (maybe 5-10C)

Thanks for that mate.

Are the 480's that loud and do they perform well?

yes and yes. they are extremely noisy tbh but worth it for the power if it doesn't bother you that much. i run mine in a room with 5 other machines on full whack constantly so one more loud fan in a room of about 20 loud fans + TNBM blasting at full volume doesn't make any difference to me :)

Out of curiosity, are you deaf yet? :D

100% fan speed is loud on a 480, but it's even louder on a 5870, saying that you will never need that much fan speed on a 5870, the highest my 480 fan has gone with a custom profile is 80%, I can live with that and temps max out at 80c.

True, 100% fan on my 5850 is flying-away fast and can be heard from two miles away :p

It never goes above 40% though and is inaudible when gaming (and I like to keep things quiet).

If year worried about noise just get a new cooler for it of buy one with a custom cooler like amp
I run mine at 70% most of the time and its not too load

Mine never goes above 85c with a max 70% fan speed on a custom profile. As far as I'm concerned that's fine and the noise is hardly an issue at that speed when playing games, can't hear it over games sounds. This has been during the really hot periods we've had during summer as well, during the cooler times it doesn't tend to get over 80 even when playing Crysis with all eye candy turned on.
