Just wondering if anyone is using one? I purchased one in Feb, and it developed a fault in July, seemed like a broken remote at 1st, like the direction pad is broken and stuck scrolling left, so amazon replaced it, now roll forwards to yesterday and the same issue again, except it is stuck scrolling up.... this time I am getting a full refund and will not touch with barge pole again, and will look for an alternative, if anyone has any suggestions?

I have the new and older model and haven't had any issues with the remotes on either. Apart from a month or so a go when the remote stopped working temporarily, I thought it was the battery, after a few minutes of faffing around it just started to work again. But turns out it was a bug that was fixed in the last update.

As for alternatives? Depends on your use case I suppose. Generally the Shield is the most recommended steaming device, since it'll play anything you throw at it without any problems.

I have one but don't use it, because they don't have auto frame rate matching.

This is a MUST on a media device.

Your TV/Apple TV/Firestick etc will do it automatically with built in apps, so unless you've encountered a device that doesn't have it, you won't know the effect.

It causes really bad stutter, where a 24 or 50 Hz signal is sent as a 60 Hz signal.

You can change it manually, but you have to change it every time you start a film/programme. Some apps like Kodi and Plex have it built in.

I found this to be a bit hit and miss, but the issue definitely exits, just not all the time for me. But even manually changing the refresh rate doesn't always cure the problem and I end up using the TV built in apps instead.

Unfortunately it really depends on the content, but it's a major PITA IMO.

A real shame as it is otherwise a great device.

I've been using one for a couple of years and love it, never had any issues.

Have Nvidia fixed the stuttering with Dolby Vision content yet?

I know there was an issue with DV content and Plex a while back, but that's been fixed for ages. I don't have any problems playing DV content through the Shield running the Plex client.

I have one just sat in the cupboard running a plex server temporarily while I sort out components for a proper plex server.
Most modern TVs have all the apps the Shield has so I'm not sure why they're so popular. I'll be getting rid of mine once my plex server is sorted

They're popular for game streaming and Plex clients basically. Plex TV apps don't tend to have full DV support. Some only support profile 5 and most will only accept DV in MP4.

Because a TV is not located in the cinema room and the projector has no apps. :p

I can't wait to have a cinema room, still a good 10 years away though because the kids need to be grown up and out of the house to make room

That's a good point, the built in plex app on my TV doesn't passthrough uncompressed Atmos. The HDMI sockets do, but the built in apps don't support it. I often forget how limited the built in apps can be and often it's a limit set by the TV, not the app makers themselves. I still find using the built in apps more convenient though

I'm looking at one of these as an alternative to using the TV's apps (my Sony's Plex has had some weird issues recently, mostly audio sync and the odd crash). Is it the best device without going for Apple TV still?

I sold my Shield due to it stuttering in Dolby Vision content across all streaming apps. Instead, I use the Sony TV (65 inch XH9505) apps and Plex - its flawless for me. I don't transcode though, and TV is using a wireless connection. The largest file I can play before is complains is approximately 70GB 4k file. How old is your TV?
