Hello,

I've been keeping an eye on the NVIDIA shield tablet and have generally heard and read very good things about them.

I may be in the market for a tablet soon and am steering towards the shield tablet but was wondering if anyone knows if a refresh is due any time soon?

These articles above both reference a Tablet 2 release date of late July or August. Anyone know any more details?

Gibbo or any of the NVIDIA reps perhaps?

It would deffo be likely that it will be refreshed soon. There were rumors for a while that there would be a Shield Portable 2 with a Tegra X1 but I would guess that a shield tablet 2 with some sort of X1 chip or some next gen version would be a lot more likely given the disapponting sales of the shield portable.

I'm a huge fan of my Shield Portable however and will wait as long as it takes for a successor, be it from Nvidia or a different company. If I was you, I'd wait. The refresh should sport a much more powerful graphics chip given how quickly they improve their mobile GPU chips.

Thanks for the response and the info. I agree it's worth waiting to see if they update the shield tablet or portable with an X1 chip. I'm trying to convince my dad to wait until end of August as it's really a gift for him..he's tempted by the sony tablet but that doesn't have the graphics power or the pen stylus...

Hopefully we'll hear more soon...

It all depends on what he wants to do. Having a more powerful GPU is not that good when there are so few apps that support it. The Sony tablet has no problems running, what is it 99% of the same apps as the Shield tablet?

Not sure its worth waiting for the X1. If your a gamer the Ipad has a better selection of games and better graphics due to the Metal API. If your not a gamer then it mostly comes down to minor features.

The GPU thing is true, but I think they'll also iron out all/most the issues they had with the first one.

I can't wait for the next Shield product. Gamecube emulation on a portable is exciting stuff.

Not sure about the tablet, but don't think there will be a Shield portable 2, at least not for a while. The original portable is still a powerhouse, there's just no real need for upgraded hardware at this point, particularly how most people simply use their device to stream games either from their PCs or from GRID. Mine only gets used to emulate 8 and 16 bit consoles. Can't be a bit of retro.

I agree, I'd only be streaming and Web browsing. But I'd hate to buy one now and see a new one released in a couple of weeks. Would be great to know for sure. Lots of rumours a couple of months months ago about a successor, but only silence now.

My dad gave up waiting and bought a Samsung 7inch tablet...i agree we should have heard something by now if it was going to be updated and based on stock levels...next Window will be the back to school Window at the end of August if they are going to do an update

Was really hoping for a successor as well, Tegra SoCs seems to be the best for emulation thanks to the GPU and Nvidia are pretty good with Android updates. Either there's just not much interest for any leakers to leak, Nvidia is just good at keeping the leaks low or there really is no successor. Trying to run the Dolphin GC emulator on a SD SoC just fails :p. Exynos does better but it's not perfect.
