I'm currently using a very old Western Digital MYTV box which is near the end of its life in terms if what it can do, I can't even get youtube on it now.

The Shield I've heard its a great media station, gaming, streaming, USB for HDD connectivity. Do you guys think its worth the high price tag though?

Im looking for something I can plug into my telly, does everything and I don't have to mess about with using a PC/mini PC when I just want to relax after work.

If your not going to use the gaming / nvidia game stream features you might be able to get away with a cheaper android box.

I don't know where android tv ends and the shield experience starts having only owned a shield mind you.

I got one for Christmas (was just using a Chromecast before that) and I absolutely love it! Can't fault it. Mainly use it for TV but have played a couple of games, works really well

yeh definitely worth imo. Got a 1st gen imported from usa on release and still going strong. Previously bought several mx, tronsmart, beelink boxes all had problems. must have spent more on them than the cost of a shield

I bought one and sold it to a friend for dirt cheap. The game streaming is not great as their is input lag and it's enough for your brain to notice and you will not have an enjoyable time. I guess it could work as a Plex server if you have a SMALL family connected, but anything more than 2-3 people you'll be running into trouble. If you are after a streaming box, their are cheaper alternatives which will work just as well, if not better in some respects.

Pick up a Steam Link when it’s on special for £17.99 and a Logitech mouse / keyboard thing.

You can use it to play your games direct, but also have full use of your computer. Use Ethernet if you’re gaming on it. I use mine for watching media, and gaming with a controller. The experience is seamless and big picture is nice.

I also believe it supports Kodi natively.

I’m pretty sure the steam link has been discontinued. The shield tv is great, but it is overkill if you just want a media player.

I think it says something about the Shield TV spec that it's what, 3 years old now? And they've not felt the need to upgrade it.
Defo, still plays games pretty well, I don't really use it for anything other that watching stuff on it now, or if i am away on holiday with decent wifi can stream my plex server from the house.

I use it for Plex, it's utterly amazing. It plays everything, including 4K HDR content perfectly. I had an HTPC for media duties but the Shield is far better. My partner likes Beach Buggy Racing on it as well so that is a bonus!

Amazon Firestick is another option.

I got a Shield TV few years back on a Black Friday deal and it was the best buy for my TV even now. Don't really play/stream games on it any more but it still provides a much smoother Android TV experience compared to the ones built into TVs. The rest of the family is used to the Chromecast before it, and since it supports Google Cast the transition to it for them was pretty seamless. Nvidia has been on top updating it as well, even better than phones that usually lags behind the latest version by a good long while.

I use my Nvidia shield daily, mainly for casting YouTube as it does a better job of it than the ATV built into my Sony 2015 TV...
Also gets used heavily for Netflix and Plex.
old console emulators too...

Thanks for all the advice, I think the shield is the way to go for its gaming and possible emulator capabilities as nice bonus.
