As i already have a 1680x1050 monitor that only has VGA and i've been offered another monitor with the same res and screen size which is also VGA can i connect them both using DVI-VGA adaptors? And should i get a third monitor in the future for tri screen would that one need a specific connection type?

Sorry i should have asked i guess, it will work on my 670 won't it or am i limited to only two screens?

You can have it work but it won't be "nVidia Surround". You can use an application called "soft th" which'll let you use one screen as the main screen and then show the peripheral view on whichever side you've got the second monitor on.

You could then "upgrade" to "surround" if you end up getting a third monitor.

This is always going to be a pretty messy solution if you have to use VGA.

It's up to you of course but I would strongly advise that you would enjoy a single, good monitor more than 3 sub-1080p monitors.

EDIT: I know that 1050 is only 30 pixels less than 1080, but horizontal pixels can't really be ignored.
