stupid question really, but would i have to remove drivers for my old 8800gt before installing my 6950?

Yes you would. Boot into safe mode and uninstall the old Nvidia drivers, then shut down and swap the cards over. When you power back up, install the ATI drivers and you should be good to go.

Uninstal Nvidia drivers via Nvidia uninstaller, then turn off PC, don't reboot.

Swap cards over, turn on PC and wait until the 6950 legacy driver has installed then reboot.

Finally install latest AMD driver from:

http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/radeon_win7-64.aspx (Wx64)

Reboot when finished.

Uninstall everything display related.

i know the 290.36 are def for the card but im still unsure of some others like the update 1.6.24 and ntune etc. ?

If your going to AMD/ATI you have no need for ANY nvidia drivers. They will only conflict or may cause graphical issue therefore as said many many times already remove them all
