Hi peeps,

Some of you will be aware of the problems I'm having with my 8800GTS on Vista x64. I'm getting a lot of stuttering during games which is making them unenjoyable to play. After many support requests, updating of drivers etc, the issue remains and I'm losing my patience with XFX now and have stated if it isn't sorted soon, I'll be returning the card and moving to ATI (their support has been very unhelpful).

So, thinking ahead, If the card is returned (XFX 8800GTS 320MB) I'll be moving to ATI instead so I'll have £200 (maybe a bit more) to throw at a decent ATI card but, I'm not up to date on their range. I want something with similar/better performance than an 8800GTS
320.

Btw - rest of my PC spec is up to the job, in signature.

Any advice is welcome,
Cheers

I see the 2900 is pretty cheap here at OcUK! £139.99 plus VAT. Is that of equal/greater performance than a 8800GTS, as it's certainly cheaper.
I have a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4, Nvidia Nforce570

I wouldn't discount Nvidia just because of one (possibly) dodgy card. Especially as the new 8800GT's are out (for under your budget) on Monday and beat the 8800GTS 640Mb by a good margin.

You tried it in XP ?

I've not got an XP System with a PCIe slot to try it in. I've just tried the new drivers and same problem - loaded the 1st level of Bioshock, skipping sequences, everso slightly then once in the game, the whole thing froze for perhaps half a second as I was being attacked, very annoying.
I never had such a problem with my old ATI card, grant it was on an XP system but still, not happy with this card at all.

And as for the PCIe - I think it's 1.0, I take it from Gareths comment that the new GTs need a 1.1 slot?

well it could be a driver issue, or something with windows install or something else, random bit of software.

but i'm another person who got completely bored of nvidia's terrible x64 vista support(albeit back in the months and months before the 2900xt was out when it was abysmal compared to now(supposedly)). very happy with my 2900xt. its as fast overall as the 8800gts, faster in some things, slower in others, in ut3 its as fast as the gtx, which maybe well be a continueing trend, especially as the ut3 engine is gonna be in a ridiculous number of games in the next year as per usual.

don't buy anything now though, wait till both companies have their new cards out. nvidia and ati are bringing out 65/55nm revisions of current cards(ati at 55nm) meaning lower power use, lower heat, higher clocks, probable better overclocking and in some cases, cheaper cards hopefully. the 2900pro/xt replacements are set to be very very VERY good cards on price performance. probably release of end of this month for nvidia's and mid november(17th or 19th last i heard) for ati, so not long to wait.

if you had to buy now there is simply nothing available that can trump a 2900pro for performance/price, not even close, you can buy two for the cost of a gtx, run in crossfire and destroy a gtx, and beat an ultra by a long distance despite it costing more than 2x2900pro's.

Thanks for that drunken master. Well, I'm trying to get onto the company who I bought it from - but their login/passwords recovery system is a compelte joke!
Seems everything surrounding this card is a joke tbh. :(
Whats the timescale on those new cards? Cos I want to secure a return ASAP and get my money back and, my mobo doesnt have VGA support so I can't run my PC without a card.

edit: RMA request now sent, should be sending the card back on Monday for a full refund (i hope!). Now just to find a new one!
