Industry watcher DigiTimes has some good news today. Apparently, disturbed by the rising presence of ATI in the discrete graphics card market, NVIDIA is planning a counter attack with the easiest way possible - cut the prices of its products. If the information is right, NVIDIA is going to slash the prices across its entire high-end GeForce GTX 200 line-up, as well as the mainstream GeForce 9800 GT and GeForce 9600 GT series. Unfortunately, the other piece of information as of when and by how much the prices will go down is unknown.

With AMD making gains in the discrete graphics card market – rising to around 40% in third-quarter 2008 according to a recent report from Jon Peddie Research (JPR) – Nvidia is planning to cut its graphics card prices in an attempt to curb further loss of market share, according to sources at graphics card makers.
AMD anticipates taking 50% of the market after reducing prices for its ATI Radeon HD 4000 series products, but to counter Nvidia has also made moves to cut prices for its GeForce GTX 200, 9800 GT and 9600 GT series.

Nvidia really did take a kicking from the ATI 4000 series going by the above report.

Just a shame only the yanks will gain. With the exchange rate now been $1.45 to the pound (and still falling :() and was $2 to the pound on 27th September, Nvidia will have to slash the price by 27.5% just to put the prices back to were they were just over a month ago.

And a 27.5% cut would be major and it may not be as big as that

I tend to agree. I don't personally see 260's dropping to the £170/180 price bracket anytime soon. Quite happy to be proved wrong though. To be honest, I'm not convinced that the current exchange rate will have totally fed into the market place yet (IE. still potential exchange rate driven price rises to come). The 260 I bought only two weeks ago, has already gone up by almost £30 on some sites!!! I think that new quad core is on hold for a while now!

Yeah, the price of goods over here tends to be about two weeks behind the exchange rate as that will be when the shop over here bought and agreed the price for them so I expect current stuff to all increase in price much more as new stock comes in.

They need to cut the prices in Europe anyway as the strengthening dollar has wacked prices up considerably in recent months. The GTX280 is now more than £100 more than I paid for mine only three months ago!

If as that says is the case then why are nvidia holding off and allowing Ati to continue even for a short while gaining more share. Sorry but i believe in action not words because nvidia has been full of words and rumours since the 4xxx series was released and so far we are seeing nothing of it more fud from nvidia to try and stall people from buying give us some action.
