Nvidia vs ATI/AMD

Sorry guys, no specific cards in mind. It was just a general question with ati and nvidia cards with the same price tag like 500squid each. Which one will be the better card? Is that still clear as mud?

Edit:
For gaming obviously

For 500 pounds you'd probably be looking at an SLi/Crossfire setup, although i'm wondering what sort of resolution you're intending to run at in order to justify the cost..

Such a shame Matrox is no longer in the gaming market, I wasn't a fan of them but they did some interesting stuff that kept the other players on their toes and more competition isn't a bad thing.

TBH if I was buying right now I'd not be putting £500 on a GPU (unless you have a 2560x res monitor or multi display gaming setup), I'd be looking for a 2nd hand GTX470 or 6950 for closer to £100 and saving the rest for next generation.

Prices fluctuate too much and then you have manufacturers with their own designs vs the reference designs which adds extra confusion.
There is no consistent winner over the entire range.

Having had about 3 ATI cards and the last 3 being nV cards, I think I'm in the nV camp for the foreseeable future.

I've had one ATI card die on me days after purchase (R9000)
I've had one ATI card that wouldn't do AGP 8x without crashing (ie, wouldn't achieve it's rated spec).
I've had one ATI card that worked flawlessly and came with free HL2 (9600XT).

From nV, I've had a 7800, 8800 and now GTX460. All of these have worked flawlessly and none of them have died on me.

My experience has led to me pledging allegiance to Team Green :)

Pledge allegiance due to some bad luck? Could have happened with Nvidia cards.

I've had 4 Nvidia cards, 4 ATI ones and never had any fundamental faults with any of them, just various bugs and quirks, pros and cons.

What would I buy? Whatever product fulfills what I want it to do within my budget.

Be a consumer based on intelligent decision making, not superstitious fallacies.

Bracing myself for the incoming ********* of AMD vs Nvidia.

Both are great cards in there own ways, but i have encountered tons of problems with AMD in the past, it's my personal experience but hey-ho, some people love AMD.

I now own sli 560's and i'm fine with what i do :), amd are great too but driver wise they need to up the gears :)
