Hi all,

been doing lots of research as will be buying a new graphics card at the end of the month. Now i was set to but a GTX260 but when the GTX280 crashed i thought my mind was made up. However a viable alt to the Nvidia card has surfaced, been looking at the ATI 3850 with a view to crossfiring it within the next couple of months. I do have a crossfire enabled motherboard. and the reviews for this card look favourable. main reason for upgrading my graphics card is due to getting a 22' monitor for xmas, find my current card 8800GT is struggling at top res's IE: 1920 * 1280. any thoughts or comments are appreciated.

Kind Regards
Richard

i guess a 280 would probably be the best, however waiting for the rumoured price drop on the 4850x2 and 4870x2 might be a better idea.

you are kinda asking near the end of this cycle of gfx cards.

tbh i would probably say a 4850x2 when the price comes down as they are already cheaper than the remaining 280s at least on over clockers.

do you mean 4850? Current best bang for buck option in the £300+ market is the 4850X2 as its 25-30% faster than the GTX280, but noisier and dual-gpu and all that entails. At 1920x1280 with AA a solo 4850 512mb does start to drop away.

I'd put it down to whatever you feel like spending really. Can't go wrong with 4850 onwards to GTX295. As far as I'm aware the 3850 is weaker than your 8800 and crossfiring two I'm not sure how well it would pull over it. (Or did you mean 4850?)

No point getting the 3850 as its old tech and doesn't crossfire as well as the 48XX. All depends on how much you wand to spend. With a 22" screen I would have thought a single 4870 or 260GTX would have sufficed, with plenty to spare. You won't loose too much on those when you sell either.

I'd say just go for a GTX260/280.
If not, for that price the other option is dual 4850's or a 4850X2.
But that depends on what chipset your mobo uses.
