hey everyone,

I'm new here so hi first of all :)

I hope that's not the total newby question but since I plan on buying a new graphics card after christmas I wondered which chipset would be better ...

Some facts about what I wanna do with it:
I mostly play games such as lord of the rings online and world of warcraft, sometimes also point and click adventures and other adventures like the witcher. I also use two screens (extended desktop).

thanks a lot for your help in advance!

You don't realise what you've just started.. (with a title like that :p)

At the moment ATi are on top due to nvidia not having anything to compete with ATis new range of DX11 cards.

Although something like a Radeon 5770 or Radeon 4890 might suit you.

Hi. May I be the first to welcome you to OCuk.

A few things that would help others make suggestions would be:
  • What is the current specification of your computer
  • What screen resolution do you use
  • How much are you looking to spend
  • Do you plan on playing more graphically intensive games when you get a new card
  • Is gaming the primary use of your computer?

If you mainly play the witcher then I'd hold off on buying an ATI 5xxx series until people can confirm whether or not the next driver update fixes it.

From what two friends of mine have said (one with a 5770, another with a 5850) and general concensus on the net, it's completely unplayable due to graphical corruption.

ATI addressed this in the 9.11 driver release notes but haven't yet provided a fix.

please don't name threads like this, I think I hear trolls coming.

*prepares for troll war*

i would say the 5770 is the best bang for buck card out at the moment but it depends on how much you are willing to spend really

i had lots of gfx corruption - (basicly black fans filling the screen) in the witcher and also a bit in crysis before downloading the latest drivers that weren't on the release cd and havent had a problem with either since. the witcher's fps problems though still dont seem to have improved, often throtlling down to 30 or less and producing lag before jerking back to 60 - here its like that with all hardware.

Hi again,

oops, sorry - I didn't mean to start a war here, hehe - just wanted to know which one would fit me better :o

Thanks a lot! :)

What exactly do you mean by specification?
My current screen resolution is 1280x1024
As for how much ... well, as little as possible :) But anything up to 600 would be fine.
No, actually not ... I just wanna make those I play look better, especially the MMOs (LotRO)
More or less, I use it for word processing and games

I've read through all your replys but actually now I'm a bit confused, he he

I've played through "The Witcher" so that doesn't need to look perfect anymore - that was just an example for the games I usually play :)

Well I like Nvidia for their constant rebranding of old products...

And I like AMD for price gouging their customers...

But which is best?

There's only one way to find out!

FIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT!

I would suggest getting either 4890 or 5770.

One has DX11 (5770) the other is a bit more powerful but "only" DX10.1

Both offer great bang for their price.

4770 is also a great little card, doesnt use too much power if you have an old/poor PSU but still packs quite a punch. Its also much cheaper

EdGey - so you would't swap your 260 gtx for a 5970 then lol coz Nvida are better. What a sweeping statment. I myself prefer Nvdia to Ati for no other real reason other than I just do. To say one is better than the other is just stupid, do tell me what Nvidia card is better than an ATI 5970? coz I want one.

Shouldn't the title read

Nvidia V AMD (ATi)

or

GeForce V Radeon

...flame on

ATI is better, get the ati 8970.

There is like loads of Nvidia Vs. ATI, you probably get more info by browsing all the other posts.
