Firstly i know its a old system compared to most here but Ive had this as my work system for a while now and fancied seeing if it was worth upgrading the cpu to something better.

i have it running at 22 x 189 = 4158mhz.

Is it worth me going for a I7 870 for less than £80 if i can find one?

Or would i not experiance any improvement?

What sort of "work" you using the PC for? Just general documents and stuffs?

If that is the case, it would make more sense to upgrade to SSD instead and it would make the PC much snappier, whereas a CPU upgrade would increase the processing power, but it's not gonna make much noticable different for general usage, except if you use the PC for demanding productive tasks such as video/audio encoding/editing etc.

Also your current overclock...can you not push the BCLK to 200? Most board should have no problem doing 200, and that would take your CPU to 4.2GHz, and memory to 1,600MHz instead of 1,512MHz (8x200 instead of 8x189).

i was thinking of the 870

ive already upgraded to a SSD:D

Its used for "work" which involves battlefield 3.............utorrent...............video conversion...........

OH and excel and word:D

I was running an i3 540 a few months ago and am now running an i5 760 and with it overclocked to 3.8ghz my system does everything i need it too with more performance than i need really.

You can pick up an i5 760 for about £60 second hand making it an absolute bargain in terms of performance you get.

The i7 870 does have hyperthreading but the difference is minimal in most things.

Dont ignore the i5 750/760 :)
