O/S Freezing

Hello :)

I've been having critical problems with my O/S, and I was advised by a friend to come here for friendly advice on how to solve my issues.

The symptoms include mouse sticking, external drive not recogising DVD's and finally a full freeze up, only remedied by a hard reboot. The mouse seems problematic since I can recreate the sticking on my laptop (so a new one will be bought), but not idea concerning the DVD's not being recognised. I have swapped drives to do more testing, but the problem persists - so for that I'm assuming it's a software/driver issue?

Last, but not least is the freezing issue. Now the system can be stable for quite some time. I had it downloading AVG and doing scans on my HD. But there is one thing that is 100% guaranteed to make my OS freeze, and that's when I'm trying to patch up my MMORPG. Always at the same % in the overral download, the pc freezes no matter if it's been on for 1minute or 1 hour. The data is secure and reliable, so I really am stuck as to why it's happening, unless it's some issue with my router.

I've downloaded and installed all the up to date drivers that I could get, but I'm still experiencing the freezing. I've installed my OS several times, and gave it a good format each time, to no avail.

Some basic specs are as follows. It's nothing special, but when working it's more than enough for what I need it for. The RAM is being replaced this week too, with 2 x 2g RAM.

Fujitsu Siemans Scaleo P
WinXP Home 32bit
Western Digital Scorpio 250g SATA
Nvidia 6200 LE 512mb
2 x 512 RAM (DDR 400mhz)

I do hope someone can be of assistance, and I thank you in advance :)

Not sure to do with this program or which version to download. I was told XP has no DOS, so is the only way to get it to run is mounting it on a cd? I have no floppy drive sadly.

Might also be worth running a hard drive diagnostic, just in case there is a bad sector or something where it is trying to put a system file.

Go here and get the Lifeguard tool 11.2 for DOS (CD).

Indeed. I ran the DLGDIAG when the problem first arose, and it confirmed that the HD itself wasn't the issue. It's recently purchased, but wanted to make sure.

I'm buying some more RAM in the morning, so does that also make that memtest a moot point? or does it do more than simply scan RAM?

Appreciate the replies :)

Well as long as you replace your existing RAM it shouldn't be a problem, but running a memtest won't be a bad thing anyway.

Ok. I didn't buy any new RAM since it seems that my M/B is a bit old, and can only support an older type, and was more expensive.

I ran a memtest on my current RAM, and it came back clear. I also ran another diagnostic on my HD which did however result in some bad sectors. I was given the option to repair these, and another scan afterwards showed no bad sectors.

All was golden I thought. But sadly not. While it was stable for over 5 hours while I was downloading M$ updates, it still crashed once or twice - and if I load up my game, that is a guaranteed freeze/crash.

Now if it only happened when playing my game, I would suspect that was causing the issue. But since it still happens when on my desktop, I am stuck for solutions :(

Is it when using your wireless by any chance? My laptop suffered from the same issues that you are having until I downloaded the latest wireless drivers from Intel (being the manufacturer of my wireless chipset). The freezes haven't occured since (and it was a few months ago) so fingers crossed.

Connected via Enet. Downloaded the drivers on the Fujitsu support page

The only hardware problem detected so far was the bad sectors on the HD. How much of an influence could that be on my system freezing? I'm quite prepared to go through the whole installation process again, just a little dubious since I've already reinstalled several times to no affect. But if those bad sectors could cause all of this, then maybe another reinstall can fix it?

I found that my manufacturer (DELL) rarely update their drivers, for this reason I just searched the original manufacturer's site (Intel). I also found that having the old wireless drivers on there (even not connected via it) sometimes caused the freeze. Try this and see what happens.

Hmm, forgive me for sounding dumb. But how can I install drivers for something I do not have?

I have no wireless card in my tower, and even the LAN is a built in version.

If you have no wireless card, wireless drivers are not the problem. Any driver problem can cause similar symptoms though, so it's worth updating all your drivers.

Sorry I presumed for some reason that you were on a laptop. My apologies. But as miniyazz says any drivers could be the cause so it is worth updating all your drivers (look for original hardware manufacturers though, not fujitsu).
